Mac Pro crashing all the time, kinda long, but need help fast!
new Intel 8 core, running leopard, all latest updates, 2 internal 500 GB HDs, 8GB ram, ATI Radeon 2600, Kona 3, ATTO FC41ES, ATTO UL5D..
Top to Bottom position: Fiber, SCSI, Kona, space, ATIparticular project…HDV, HDCam, DV, captured Prores 422 (HQ)
crashed while rendering, crashes when edit to tape, crashed when you pick your nose…
i recently rebuilt the system from scratch, double checked card positions.
every so often I get an error stating some effect can’t be rendered because of my hardware configuration, or some effect can’t be rendered in a sequence of that size with my current video card…
i’m thinking my video card may be bad…i have dual monitors, originally, had 2 VGA monitors, then connected a widescreen DVI monitor and the 1 VGA monitor (still crashed)…then took the VGA off, rendered stuff with just the 1 monitor, everything worked…connected another DVI…crashed again…removed the other DVI monitor still crashed…
sequence is ProRes, render is prores, tried it with intermediate codec as sequence, no help…any ideas? bad video card?
I’m going to change the card out with a 1900 I have in another 8 core, to see if that helps….any ideas would be great…this is killing me and our clients!

Fibre and SCSI? need both? Time to start real trouble shooting. Remove all of the cards…see if it still crashes. Might have to put some video on the internal drive, but you have to start ruling things out. If it works, add one card…try again. Then the other card.
Have you installed anything other than FC Studio? Plugins? Best to have fresh install…see if it works. Then install plugins one at a time and test if it works. When it doesn’t, you have your culprit.
This will mean a long night for you or someone…been there.

Dunno if this may help, but when I had random crashing when working I turned off thumbnails in the timeline and it stopped.
I still have the odd crash on opening a bin and converting to big icons. I think there’s something squiffy in the thumbnail cache side of things – looking at the activity monitor shows some strange memory usage. A restart cured this – I remember reading about FCP memory leakage a while back, this may be related.
As to the Edit to Tape, make sure you’re using it right – do a search here. I think you have to make sure the sequence is in the viewer NOT the canvas – it’ll crash if not. I’ve fallen foul of that before.

thanks for the responses….SCSI and FIBER, both are needed, not at the same time though, but I would hate to swap in the right card between sessions…
a little more trouble shooting is starting to look like the 2600 graphics card is the culprit…i installed a 1900 from one of our other FCPs, and so far it looks like it is working correctly, not crashing.
a clue was probably the error message telling me i couldn’t render Bad TV effect with this hardware (graphics card)…i’ll update if indeed this is the issue.

looks like the effect cannot render issue is the graphics card…changing it out for a 1900XT, which all the other 8 core FCPs have…that’s a 512 card, where the 2600HD in there now is a 128 card, so that solves 1 problem…
the other problem, I think I have some weird media issue i’m trying to track down now.

i can render in chunks, but when I go to render complete timeline, it crashes. This happens with either 2600HD or 1900XT card installed…
the fiber card is only installed, fiber is not connected at this point, only SCSI.

My system started not crashing, but putting up an error message on renders. Intermittently. Using DiskWarrior on my RAID fixed it. Do not do this unless you have assurance from the RAID manufacturer that it’s OK. DiskWarrior straightened out errors in the OS-X directory structure of the RAID volume and cured the render error. I had only a suggestion that it was OK from the Highpoint folks. So I made sure my backup was in place before running DW.
