  • Trashing Preferences and keeping favorites

Posted by Ronald Thomas on October 1, 2008 at 5:33 pm

    Hi,

I need to trash my preferences but I want to keep my favorites (filters, transitions, etc.) I know there’s a way to do this, but I can’t remember what it is and I can’t find it searching the forums. Can someone help?

    I’m using FCP 6 OSX 10.4.11

    Thanks!

One strategy is to use the free application Final Cut Rescue

    https://www.vimeo.com/1679569

to back up your preferences. That way you can restore an earlier version with all of your favorites. Won’t help you now, but will the next time you need to trash.

    Lee,

If you like FCP Rescue, you’ll really love Preference Manager. It allows you to save multiple sets of prefs. I have a set for HDV projects, a set for DV projects, etc., etc. If you bounce around between projects like I do it’s great. It’s also free BTW…

This belongs on the basics forum.

Simply drag the Favorites folder in the browser window and keep it with the project. Or keep a project that holds only preferences. Or as David said said use a specialist tool like Preferences Manager.

    All the best,

    Tom

You can drag filters into the bin area, right alongside video clips.

So, start a new project and tear off the “Effects” tab so it make it’s own window. Drag your favorites from the effects folder right into the bin area. Then, save the project.

Go ahead and restore, wipe, or whatever you want to Final Cut. When your effects get wiped out, just open that project and drag them back the other way.

I keep copy of that project with me on a flash drive in case I need to use someone else’s system. I get all my favorite effects without messing up that person’s favorites.

    Thanks David,
As soon as I saw your post I checked it out and it is a cool free app. For some reason only the first two posts in this thread are appearing on my laptop so I am responding to your post here.

Yep Lee, there’s something strange going on here. Maybe the people from FCP Rescue have hacked my post, cuz it’s missing now…

i would love to check out your favorites and preferences is there a way a new editor like myself could get those and learn something from some of you seasoned pro’s – like a resource place or whatever?
    thanks and be well
