  Opening an old FCP project on a new computer

  Just got a new Apple Box (2 x 2.8 Quad Core) reinstalled FCP studio to the new system drive, then did all the updates. Running FCP 5.1.4 (which is what I was running previously) I put my OLD system drive in the new box, and then copied my FCP project folder to my new system drive. When I tried to open a project file I got this message:

  “This project is unreadable or may be too new for this version of Final Cut.”

  Help! I’ve got another day of editing to do on a weekly sports show, and a Tuesday night deadline. Can anyone suggest why I can’ t open an old project? I double checked, and was running 5.1.4 on my old system too.

  If you have your old machine, I’d put the drive back in, and export an XML just to be safe.

  Before that, maybe try running system update again, because you need to run it a couple times to get all updates. It appears your old system was updated beyond the current state of your new machine.

  The old warning about not upgrading during a project might apply also, for future consideration.

  Thanks for the reply Steven. Tried the software update. Nothing available. Manually searched the Apple downloads for a FCP 5 update – nothing there. Like I say, both the old version and the new version show 5.1.4

  As for the not updating while in the middle of a project, 🙁 when am I NOT in the middle of a project?

  I’ll try what you suggested about exporting an XML.
