Exporting to QT
I’m trying to do something very simple — export a short sequence form Final Cut 4.5, shot and captured in DV NTSC at 4:3. Since I get an error message on my Compressor when I export to it (another issue for another day) I export to QuickTime, but the resulting file is not 4:30, but “squeezed” from the left and right sides, making a square, and distorted, image.

In the Compressor Inspector, make sure your framing is set to 16:9.

As i said, I’m not using Compressor, just exporting to QT.

Oh, well if you do a QUICKTIME MOVIE export, it will keep the pixel dimensions. So if you are 16:9 anamporphic, it will export it squeezed. NLE’s can unsqueeze that. Or are you exporting as Quicktime CONVERSION? If so, then I’d skip that and use Compressor so you aren’t squeezed.
Why do you need this unsqueezed?

Thanks., Shane. As i said, it was shot and captured in 4:3, not 16:9. I’m exporting a QT Movie, and it’s squeezing it. I need it unsqueezed because it’s distorted! I want the file to be in the normal 4:3 aspect ration I shot it in.

Got me. I shouldn’t be doing that. You are exporting as a Self Contained QT Movie, right? Using the Sequence settings and not recompressing?

Yes, exactly. And it’s giving me a “square,” 4:4 file, squeezed on the left and right sides.

Hi Rob,
Whatever think you export from FC other than with Square pixels (NTSC,PAL, HD,..) will look distort in QT player. QT read all those pixels, whatever the kid, as Square.
If you want something to be played in computers screens, you better start working in a Square pixels sequence.
You can avoid also the distortion by tweaking the “Movie properties (video track> Visual Setting)” in QT. But be careful if you try to re-import the movie to FC. Will have different properties.
