Set up for 16×9 in FCP5
Can someone please advise how I set up a project for footage shot in 16×9? I am running FCP version 5.x so I don’t have the range of presets that FCP6 has. Or do I set up DV PAL (editing for New Zealand) and size the footage to that?

If the material is PAL 16×9 DV you use the PAL DV Easy Setup and check the anamorphic box.

Just to clarify:
I select the “DV-PAL Anamorphic” in the dropdown (there is no anamorphic checkbox)And to to export (to burn to dvd):
I export to Quicktime as DV-PAL Anamorphic.Sorry if this sounds stoopid but it is my first real FCP project…

Yes, that will do it. Widescreen DV is squeezed anamorphically, squishing a 16×9 frame horizontally onto a 4×3 frame. If you don’t tell FCP the material is anamporphic you will get either squeeezed video with very tall and skinny people filling the entire 4×3 canvas, or unsqueezed but letterboxed in the 4×3 canvas, with black bars on top or bottom. When you setup properly for anamorphic, FCP displays a 16×9 canvas and unsqeeezes the 4×3 video horizontally to fill the frame. Got it?

My only other thought is that the DVD will be viewed at schools using older 4×3 televisions. Will this make a difference to the output format I choose?

If you properly set the widescreen settings in Compressor when encoding your MPEG2 files for the DVD a flag is on your DVD that makes it display 16×9 on widescreen TVs and letterboxed on 4×3 TVs.
It’s all in the manual.

Thanks, but I’ve never done a wedding video. I can honestly say I’ve probably worked on every type of film/video project except wedding videos. I even did one bat mitzvah video for a client’s daughter, but no wedding. I primarily make historical, political, and environmental documentaries and corporate communications as well.

Hi David
Well I spent the afternoon trawling through the 4 volumes of FCP manual and I am still at a loss of what Compressor setting to use – DVD Best Quality 90min -16×9?
The manuals jump all over the place regarding Compressor with little explanation of the settings.
