  • Title safe in 16:9 & 4:3

I have spent countless hours searching the web for an answer to my question however nothing has really helped as of yet. Here is the situation. I worked on a commercial recently and the project was done in HD 1080i. All of the text was kept within title safe and looks perfectly fine on a HD 16:9 monitor. Whenever I play it on an SD 4:3 monitor I loose part of the text. What should I be doing in my project to ensure that it will display properly on a 16:9 and 4:3 screen. I would hate to move the text considering it will add more space around the screen on a 16:9. I want to make sure the edge of the text meets the edge of the screen regardless of the aspect ratio. Is there a way to do this other than making two different versions? The network we are submitting this to states that they will only run one version of the video.

4:3 will usually just be a centre punch of the 16:9, cutting off the sides and any text outside as well.

The only way to be absolutely sure it won’t happen is to move all the text inside a 4:3 title safe within the 16:9 version. I hate doing it too and wish that 4:3 broadcasting would just go away, but it won’t so I comply. Digital Heaven have a simple 4:3 title and action safe generator for 16:9 projects. Just drop the clip on top of your text and it will show your safe areas.

a quick search of this forum should throw up lots of 4:3 in side 16:9 templates… I’m pretty sure Dylan was offering a free PSD that has all the safe areas on it, you can certainly download one from the BBC commissioning website, and if it helps you can get my own Safe Guides plugin for FCP from https://web.me.com/andymees

    Hi Andy,

I’ve just been on your website and downloaded the title-safe plugin as it looked a bit more hi-tech than the ‘title-safe tape’ we use on the monitor where I am. I’ve not installed a plugin before. What do I need to do to actually use it? I’ve copied it across to my FCP Plugins folder. Is that right? Then what??

    Many Thanks,
    Alex

you have to copy it to /Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support/Plugins
then then next time you launch FCP it will show up in Effects > Video Generators > Andy’s Guides

    Yo Andy!

This is a sweet little tool! It really is the best way to know if your stuff was shot protected for 4×3.

    Keep up the good work!!

    Hi Andy,

I’ve downloaded the file, and copied it into the folder, but it’s not coming up where you’ve said it should.
I even looked at the file info to see where you had it installed, and everything seems to correct on my end, but it just won’t show up!! I’ve restarted the computer as well….still no luck.
When I double click on the file, it says Wrong Type within FCP.
Is there any light you can shed??
Is it still compatible with the current version of FCP?

    Thanks for your help.

[Shayne Cantly] “I’ve downloaded the file, and copied it into the folder, but it’s not coming up where you’ve said it should. “

Thats odd … just in case it didn’t happen automatically, did you remember to unzip it first?

[Shayne Cantly] “I even looked at the file info to see where you had it installed, and everything seems to correct on my end, but it just won’t show up!! I’ve restarted the computer as well….still no luck. “

Are you 100% certain you have installed in the right folder? you have a couple of options:
/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro System Support/Plugins (thats the Library folder at the root level of your system hard drive .. and the plugin goes inside that Plugins folder at the give path)
or ~/Library/Preferences/Final Cut Pro User Data/Plugins (thats the Library folder thats inside your home/user folder .. and again, the plugin goes inside that Plugins folder at the give path)

[Shayne Cantly] “When I double click on the file, it says Wrong Type within FCP. “

Its not an exceutable in that way, it needs to be in the Plugins folder as above, and is loaded by FCP when the app launches

Hopefully one of the above comments?

[Shayne Cantly] “Is it still compatible with the current version of FCP? “

    Absolutely.

    Best
