  • Printing HDV to DV Tape as 4×3

Thanks to some of the responses I got on this forum, I was able to solve my first issue. For those who may be interested, my solution to the problem of creating a 4×3 SD-DVD from my 16×9 HDV sequence was:

Forget about putting your HDV sequence in a 4×3 sequence. I simply exported using QT conversion (using Pro Res), used Compressor to make my mpeg and Dolby files, and then just chose the proper settings in DVD SP. The result, while not lovely, may be the best I could hope for downconverting HDV to SD.

Now I have a new problem: my client now wants the film on DV tape as well as DVD. He still wants it 4×3 SD. No letterboxing allowed. I can make a widescreen tape no problem, using my Z1U as a recording deck. I don’t have a clue how to make a 4×3 tape.

    Anyone know the secret?

    Thanks!

    Hi,
I would export a QT file in DV NTSC, making sure that when you choose the settings etc, to crop to 4:3. This way, the new file will be the correct ratio as well as format. Then I would reimport the QT clip and cut it into a DV sequence and then edit to tape from there.
    best of luck
