How To: TAG FCP Clips?
Howdy all,
Currently I digitize all of my reels as one long clip. I’m trying to figure out a way that I can tag fcp clips with information about the clip. Be it the people in the shot, the location, whatever.
Ultimately, I’m trying to build a searchable database that will allow me to find all clips that have those tags.
Anyone have any idea how to do this? I’ve been searching for a solution and have found nothing…

Hi Aaron,
I’m using a very basic and effective system that allow me to retrieve the footage that I’m archiving in BR.
Click and Com-i any Clip to open the Info window. You only need to type the words in the “Spotlight Comment” window. Then use Spotlight or “Find” to look for it.

So far you have taken the easy way to capture. Now you want to be organized with your footage so you can find a clip very easily. In order to do that, you will need to log and capture each individual clip. Logging your individual clips allows you to be as specific as you want to be. Enter as much information as you want. Now when you you need to find a clip in an instant, you can find it instantly and put it in your timeline. What you are doing is spending a little more time capturing your footage rather than spending a lot more time editing and searching through your footage.
You can always subclip your large capture one clip file but that is not as efficient as logging your clips.

Because of the nature of what I shoot and the time I have to digitize and edit the footage, capturing full reels is really my only option.
In old versions of Pinnacle’s Studio software, the program would make new clips every time it analyzed the footage and realized the tape had started to shoot a new clip. It would break the clips up as you digitized. Is there any quick way to do this in FCP? I know I can shoot time of day time code, then have FCP break up clips using that, but it takes forever…

You might want to consider Final Cut Server. Use annotations which are searchable (although I’m having some problems with it lately, likely user error).

FCP does have a start/stop detection. It is very fast and efficient. Makes a subclip every time you hit record.
It is your time do what you want with it.

Steve, how do I utilize this option?

with dv footage only
open clip to viewer
dv start/stop detect
move clip in browser to new bin
open the disclosure triangle to left of clip in bin in browser
select all the markers created
go modify > make subclip
if you need to name clips before doing then change markers from browser or canvas
my advice dont capture more than 30 mins off DV it goes out of sych
HDV can be captured and broken into separate clips on capture and defaults to this with HDV to Prores capture (which is one of the easiest ways to capture)
If not from these 2 formats, forget about it, learn how to log and capture it is quick once you know how
you can use fields from final cut like label for tagging of sorts and description is a good field as well
learn how to search in the browser and then you can retrieve clips easy
also bins are your friend for what you are trying to do
