  • P2 cards and offline and online workflow advise…

Posted by Hamilton Robinson on August 29, 2008 at 7:45 am

Hi I am new p2 cards and offline and online capture.

What is the easiest way to work with p2 card footage once it has been captured at full quality?

We are considering different P2 card cameras some high end or HVX202.

We are wanting to capture on p2 and dump to a hard drive at full quality.

At a later stage work offline at low res and then use saved files at full P2 capture quality for export and finishing.

Once all the footage has been captured….what is the easiest method to work with a low quality version of the footage for editing.

What should I set my sequence too for easy low system demand (offline) to get the final edit. any other settings.

Never having worked with p2 and abit confused about easy offline & online if you have first captured a lot of film footage to edit off hard drives at a later stage.

Any and all advise welcome of best ways to edit and work with p2.

I am probably thinking of editing the P2 footage on a high end macbook pro on FCP6

    Suggested work flow? traps?

    Cheers

There’s absolutely zero reason for “offline to online” workflow with P2. The data rates are so low there’s no reason to create “low rez” files. Just work in the native resolution from start to finish.

    Thanks Walter.

What are the data rates for high end P2 cards compared to say HDV?

Does P2 give you a high enough quality with low data rates? we are looking for good quality for an indie feature film and like the transfer and ease of P2.

What are you experiences with P2? positive?

Thanks again for taking the time to write.

    Hamilton,

Like Walter said, no reason for an offline with P2.

As far as numbers go, DVCProHD footage is going to have a higher datarate than HDV, considering that HDV is the same as DV. There is a good article on the cow somewhere (sorry, didn’t have time to find it right now) that details the differences in datarates.

What I can tell you is this:

    1. I have been working with P2 footage shot with the HVX200 for 2 years now.
    2. I shoot 720/24\pN all the time.
    3. I edit with a MBP 2.16, 2 gigs, and FCS2 with no problems.
    4. Footage is either stored on a single FW800 bus powered 2.5″ drive with which I can get two streams in real-time just fine OR a CalDigit S2VRHD five disk RAID connected via eSATA with which I can get a bunch of streams (never really maxed it out to see just how many)
    5. P2 is very easy to deal with.

Do your research, watch Shane’s tutorial on the cow, and have a backup and archive plan in place and you should have a positive experience as well.

I have been working with P2 since they came out with the HD version, and have always worked with it at full resolution. I haven’t done the offline online workflow for years.

Here is an article I wrote about the matter:

    https://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/P2.php

And I have a blog about working with P2 here: http://www.LFHD.net

NO reason to offline and online. Pointless and a waste of time…IMHO.

    Thanks guys…

Any other tips with working with P2 cards and high end data rates.

We are filming a feature film with P2 cards and want the best result.

What sequence setting in FCP do you recommend for P2?

When it time to export what do you export your P2 footage out as for a high quality master?

    Cheers

[Hamilton Robinson] “What sequence setting in FCP do you recommend for P2?”

The frame rate you shot in. Since there are dozens of frame sizes and frame rates, that is something you need to determine. If 720p24PN, then DVCPRO HD 720p24. If 1080i24PA, the DVCPRO HD 1080i24. It all depends on the format you shoot.

[Hamilton Robinson] “When it time to export what do you export your P2 footage out as for a high quality master?”

DVCPRO HD tape, HDCAM, D5, HDCAM SR…All depends what you want to deliver.

    Hi

We are thinking of shooting progressive on P2 cards maybe 1080p25..still possible to edit on amacbook pro at this setting?

We want to export to Highest quality HD QT for playing at cinema’s via hard drives and possible 35mm blow up.

Any suggestions on export settings for best quality master for these options from a p2 card source?

Final work flow suggestions? recommend any good articles on P2 editing work flow in FCP.

    Cheers

[Hamilton Robinson] “1080p25..still possible to edit on amacbook pro at this setting?”

Yes. Just get an eSATA drive to store the media…and an eSATA Express34 card to attach the drive to your computer.

[Hamilton Robinson] “Any suggestions on export settings for best quality master for these options from a p2 card source?”

For QT, you need to consult with the theaters about what they require in terms of codecs for them to play out via hard drive. For possible film out, you need to consult with a post production house that does film outs from video to figure out the workflow that you need to do.

    Articles on the P2 workflow:

    https://library.creativecow.net/articles/ross_shane/P2.php
And read my blog. While it is mainly about P2 for broadcast production, I talk about my editing workflows with the format. http://www.LFHD.net. Start in the archives at the beginning.

    Thanks Shane…

What do you think are the drawbacks of the panasonic P2 format?

have you had any quality issues?

Have you shot any feature films on P2 cards?

    Cheers

[Hamilton Robinson] “What do you think are the drawbacks of the panasonic P2 format?”

Cost of the cards, and the need to archive the footage. With tape you have the tape. With P2, you need to buy a tape backup like LTO (spendy), or rely on hard drives (that can die).

[Hamilton Robinson] “have you had any quality issues?”

Nope. I always hired good DPs. And shot a bit myself with this. You have to not know what you are doing to get a bad image from this camera.

[Hamilton Robinson] “Have you shot any feature films on P2 cards?”

No, I am an editor…but I know of several films, feature and short, that were shot with this camera. Even pickup shots in CLOVERFIELD.
