Converting 1080i 24 to 720p 24

I am in the middle of digitizing a large batch of DVCPro tapes. The majority of them were shot at 720p 24 fps, which is the format our editor will be using to cut the piece. However, some tapes were shot at 1080i 24 fps, and I need to be . We tried unsuccessfully to convert the 1080i footage to 720p with our deck during ingest. I was then advised to try ingesting using the 1080i 29.97 Apple ProRes 422 setting, which worked in that I have ingested clips that look and sound fine. However, I consistently receive error messages that these clips are not optimized for Final Cut, followed by a suggestion to use Media Manager to resolve the issue.
Any tips as to how to solve this problem? I need everything to end up being 720p 24.

Use Compressor…and the Advanced Conversion setting for DVCPRO HD 720p24.

What deck are you using for ingest and what method – firewire or HD SDI. if it’s HD SDI then what I/O card are you using?

Using a Panasonic 1200A deck for ingest via firewire.

You are correct that the 1200A can’t cross convert 1080i to 720P via firewire. If you cared to spend the money on a Aja or Blackmagic I/O device ($1500 – $2500) you could cross convert on ingestion thru them.
As it is there is no reason to go to ProRes, it introduces another codec conversion for no benefit. I would ingest all material as 1080i and then either use the Final Cut media manager or Compressor to create new 720P files from them.

If you had a Kona3 or ioHD, you can put the deck in 23/24 mode which will cross convert your footage to 1080psf23.98 (removing the pulldown in the process) then you can use the Kona card to cross convert back to 720p23.98.
Without the card, you capture @ 1080i29.97 and then use Compressor to do a rev telecine and cross convert to 720p23.98.

Lana’s original post stated that her material was 1080i/24 – not 29.97. It should be a simple cross convert without a need to change frame rates.
