has the time finally come for leopard on my MBP?
I’ve had a number of ongoing projects on my MBP (OSX 10.4.11 – QT 7.3 – FCP 602) but I think I’ve reached the stage now where I could copy across the build of Leopard that’s sitting on an external FW drive.
I’ve IoHD and work XDcamHD & EX. All seems to be working properly when I boot from this Leopard drive (via USB to leave the FW bus available for the IoHD).
But am I letting myself in for troubles down the line?
Can I as anyone whose using Leopard on a MBP with FCS and a lot of twiddly bits whether there are any gotchas or potential problems awaiting me or are they stable and happy with their systems?
What version of QT is recommended? As I’ve seen a lot of posts about the suitability of the latest ones for the proapps?
Any comments would be very gratefully received.

Hi Alan,
I’m working in a MBP with an ioHD too, and editing mostly EX-1 footage.
I think since the release of Leopard, at last things are working smooth.
Previous combinations had plenty of problems. But I think most of them coming from MacOX and QT..
I’m really happy with the actual combo MacOX 10.5.4- QT 7.5- FC 6.0.4. It seems that they have tuned the three together.

Leopard works great on my MBP, but I STRONGLY recommend you do a clean install of Leopard. Pain in the ass to re-install all the other stuff, but worth it.

I did a clean Leopard install on the external drive and built all software in that.
I plan to carbon copy the entire working drive over to the MBP, is this just as good or do you mean I should start from scratch on the internal drive?

Start from scratch on the internal. Fewest chances of anything getting screwed up.

Heh. Almost ashamed to admit that I’m still using an 800 mHz TiBook. It’s pretty souped up with a 100 GB boot drive and 1 GB of RAM. Thinking of going with Leopard by mounting my TiBook as a FW Drive. Upgrading to a MBP will have to wait until the big bucks begin rolling in. LOL.

My MBP seems to run very well when booting off the external FW drive connected via USB. (Great book by the way – one of my bibles!)
Chris, I guess I’m going to have to take your advice, but it’s a bit of pain.

There’s no reason you can’t clone a new installation of both Leoprd and FCS from your firewire drive. I don’t know if Chris understood that you had installed both from scratch, but needless to say, installing to a firewire, testing, then cloning that to the system drive is a very legtimate workflow for updating an editing machine. That’s the only way I do it.
