  • OT: Where to get DSR-45 serviced?

Posted by Tim Irwin on August 25, 2008 at 5:31 pm

Our DSR-45 ate a tape today and I want to send it somewhere to get looked at. We have had some less than stellar experiences with our local repair center, so I’m looking for recommendations for places where you guys have had good experiences.

    Gracias, Tim

Depends on where you are located. Is the deck still under warranty?

In the Chicago area we have a few very good repair facilities.

Troubleshooting the deck. First try a head cleaning tape. Second put in another tape (non critical footage) in the deck. If it eats the tape, you have a problem.

Was the tape a Full Size DVCAM, Small DVCAM or a Mini DV tape? I’m guessing it was a mini DV tape. Over the past 8 years, I have encountered only 1 bad full size DVCAM tape. No bad small DVCAM tapes. Personally, I have never had any bad mini DV tapes but I have heard horror stories from others.

We are in Salt Lake City, but don’t mind shipping it somewhere. The deck seems fine now that I got the tape out, cleaned the heads.
It was a sony premium mini-dv tape that got eaten, and I’m inclined to think it was the tapes fault, but frankly, I’d like to send it in to get some CLA anyway. The deck doesn’t get a lot of use as most of our standard def material is on d-beta. We bought the deck used a few years ago and it would help me sleep better if i knew someone more qualified than me had a look inside and gave it some love.

Unless the deck gives you an error code, you are 99% safe to say the deck is fine.

I have over 20 years experience with all deck formats.

I would say use a more reliable DVCAM deck, like the 1500A. The cassette holder in the DSR-45 is awful; sometimes Sony gets weird with how tapes go in. The only issue is you can’t play LP tapes in the 1500A, but you shouldn’t be shooting LP anyway.

The DSR-45 also has weird functions like beeping just because REC-INHIBIT is on.

Backporch Broadcast here in Atlanta is an authorized Sony and Panasonic service center. We send all our VTRs to them once a year for maintenance. Good folks.
