I was working through the genie lamp tutorial. In part 2 he created circles under the lamp using a graphic. I can not figure out how he did this step.
It is important to the rest of the project.

After looking at Project One where he first introduced his circle textures, they look like footage he’s imported from Photoshop, since the are psd’s. So make some circular textures in PhotoShop.

You can do something similar in AE, although not that fancy scroll work.

Try this. Scribble on a Mask with Polar Coordinates. Details follow.

Make a large square comp, 640×640.

Add a Solid, long and narrow, 640×60.
On the narrow solid, with the Pen Tool draw a 2 point open mask that stretches from the far left to the far right. First click on the left edge, then on the right edge. Add the Effect>Render>Scribble (Fill Type: Centered Edge) and you should have a squiggly line that runs the length of the strip. Stroke Width and Stroke Options will let you change the look of the squiggles, and change Wiggle Type to Static (near bottom) unless you want the squiggle to change over time.

Precompose that strip layer (Layer>Precompose, move all attributes, don’t open comp).

To make the circle. To that precompose layer, Effect>Distort>Polar Coordinates, change the Type of Conversion: Rect to Polar, and crank it up to 100%. You may have to reposition the circle.

You should be good to go.
