Project File Unrecognized “Wrong File Type”
Posted by Evan Schafer on August 14, 2008 at 2:49 pmHello all-
I’m getting an error while trying to open any and all project files on my system, “File Error: Wrong Type”. I was working on the system all day yesterday without any problems, I havent done any updates to anything on the system, and today I am getting this error.
I can open FCP and open QT movies and they will play fine within FCP and out through my Kona, just no projects. I’ve gone through the usual motions of trashing prefs, repairing permissions, rebooting.
System details:
Mac Pro 2 x 3ghx dual core w/4G RAM
OS 10.4.11
FCP v 6.0.2
Kona Lhe w/5.1Kris Strobeck replied 9 years, 10 months ago 9 Members · 17 Replies -

August 14, 2008 at 2:57 pmHi Evan
That absolutely sound to some media corruption or so.
you need to find out which clip or graphic is causing the problem.
The only way is to put the media off-line.
Bring the media back in batches opening FC after each batch.
in the moment that fc fails to open you found it.

August 14, 2008 at 3:18 pmI took all my media offline and tried again, but it’s still not recognizing the projects. In the application itself, all the project files are grayed out. I have another system here @ 6.0.2 as well, which will open the files in question, so I would think it is not the projects, but the app itself that is corrupt somehow.

August 14, 2008 at 3:34 pmNow clearly smells problems with the system.
Reinstall the last FC update that you have installed, so you will keep in the same version.
If that doesn’t works, you know: Trashing Preferences.
Anyway, before to tweak FC I always recommend to make sure than your Mac OX is optimized: Permissions, Directories, caches..So Maintenance, DiskWarrior or TechTools.

August 14, 2008 at 3:36 pmCurious indeed. I’ve been working under the theory of “If it aint broke, dont fix it” for a while now with 6.0.2, but it looks like it’s broken and needs fixin’. I just hate having to update to fix things, you know?
I’ll let you know how it works out.

August 14, 2008 at 3:39 pmI agree it’s sounds and smells like a system problem. I’m going to take this version of FCP down and reinstall. I might have to go to 6.0.4 though, as I didnt save the updater for the 6.0.2 version and Apple is pretty bad about keeping older versions available for download on their site. Maybe I’ll get lucky.
Will let you know how it turns out.

August 14, 2008 at 3:41 pmSure, If you can, fallow the advice of Jeremy.
At least for my self, FC 6.0.4 with QT 7.5 and Mac OX 10.5.4 are working well in my MBP.

August 14, 2008 at 3:44 pmEvan- before doing all of that. Did you follow the link I sent? Is that the error you are getting?

August 14, 2008 at 3:47 pmJeremy,
I did follow it but, no, it is not the error I’m getting. The one I’m getting is: “File Error: Wrong Type.”

August 14, 2008 at 3:52 pmOK. Just checking. I’d would update to the latest and greatest before reinstalling. See if that works. Like what Rafael said, the latest combo seems to be working pretty well. If that doesn’t work, then reinstall.
