RAID 0 HD10 bit uncompressed Playback on 3 stripped internal Hardrives.
I dont know where else I would post this but I wanted to verify if people out there are doing it. Im aware that its more of an RAID question but didnt see a forum.
Here goes:
I have the 3ghz Dual Core Intel Xeon with 4 drive bay slots. (I currently am using 2)
I want to stripe three 500gb drives together in a raid zero to support 10bit uncompressed HD playback in FCP and leave one bay for the boot drive. Is this possible?Please let me know if there are any other details needed, or if anyone out there is using Xeons in this config.

You can certainly stripe the drives, but you will not get enough throughput to edit uncompressed HD. You will need six to eight drives striped to reliably edit uncompressed HD. This is why most capture to a intermidiate compressed HD format such as ProRes or DVCProHD, bot of which will do just fine on a three drive raid.

He can do uncompressed 8-bit, but not 10-bit. Need 4 drives for that. There are kits to move the system drive to the empty slot below the optical, then you can add a 4th drive. I’ve done that.

But Shane, who would really want to edit 8-bit uncompressed HD on a system running just the minimum requirements?

I had this setup for about a year, and it works fine until the drives are just over half full. Then everything starts slowing down, from opening projects, to lag time on playback etc…
I don’t know if using a RAID card decreases these problems.
About the 10-bit HD, it dropped frames on capture with me.
