HD Sequence (23.98 fps) Delivering on DigiBeta
Greetings,
I am delivering a behind the scenes featurette for the DVD release of an Indie feature. All of the interviews and bts footage were shot using the Panasonic HVX at 720p. Clips of the film were also 23.98 fps as they were shot with Varicam. I edited in a 720 by 480 sequence at 23.98 fps. The client asked for delivery to Digi-Beta, which I understand is 29.97 fps. What steps do I need to take, if any, before Edit to Tape and finishing this sequence on Digi-Beta? Thanks in advance for your help. -

Is your client aware of the many advantages of authoring a DVD with 23.98 footage with 3:2 pulldown flags vs. 29.97 footage?
A quick rundown:
– 20% space savings
– better encoding quality
– better playback on computers and progressive-capable DVD players/TVs (no deinterlacing required)If you know who the client is using for DVD authoring, perhaps you can contact them directly and ask them to explain to the client the benefits I just listed. Hopefully the authoring house is savvy enough to understand the benefits of working with 23.98 source material vs. 29.97.

I agree with this. In my research have found many answers just like this. I will be using an AJA IO to edit to Digi-Beta, which I understand handles the pulldown automatically? Other than that, I will provide them with a 23.98 full res quicktime that they can encode DVD from if they decide to. Thanks again, for your advice. It should deliver directly to IFC, so I assume their authoring facility will be pretty savvy.

Totally agree with your the above post but if you have to go to DBeta… your output card adds the pull down as it plays out so there is really nothing specially you have to do. Of course the tape’s TC and the timeline’s TC will not match because of the added frames in going up to the 30 frames.

Your research led you to the correct conclusion. You don’t need to worry about it. Just make sure the program starts at 01:00:00:00. And deliver non-drop frame TC if possible. The authoring house’s encoding system will likely remove the pulldown and create a 24p DVD. This is normal. Every authoring house I’ve dealt with wants delivery on Digibeta, even though they end up making a 24p DVD.
