Mpeg2 question
Posted by Anton Shu on August 6, 2008 at 2:48 pmHello everyone,
Is it possible to export mpeg2 file via compressor 2 with video bitrate of 15 mbps?
My video files are DVPAL res. (720×576 4:3 25 fps)
The way I do such a conversion is : I`m exporting AVI without compression and via PC tmpeg encoder exporting the mpeg2 with 15mbps, I`m sure this is wrong way and very time consuming.

August 6, 2008 at 3:11 pmYes, that is a very inefficient workflow. Almost anything is possible using Compressor, but what is the objective you’re trying to accomplish with the 15mbps MPEG2? Are you trying to make MPEG2 transport stream for delivery?

August 6, 2008 at 3:53 pmAre you sure anything is possible with Compressor 2? I think the highest data rate you can get from SD PAL is 9Mbps. You can get up to 29Mbps with HD, but I don’t know how to do that with SD.
I’d love to be proven wrong though. 🙂

Come on Ed, when will you ever learn, I’m always up for that challenge.
See page 185 in the Compressor manual, re: stream usage (i.e. creating an MPEG2 transport stream).
Stream Usage
Choosing a setting from the Stream Usage pop-up menu ensures the encoded MPEG-2
stream will be suitable for how you intend to use it. The options in the Stream Usage
pop-up menu include:Generic: The Generic option allows you complete access to all the MPEG-2 settings.
This is the only option that supports the MPEG-2 640 x 480 video format in addition
to the SD and HD video formats. It is also the only option that supports creating
transport and program streams. It supports the complete bit rate range of 2.0 Mbps
to 40.0 Mbps.David Roth Weiss

August 6, 2008 at 4:26 pmI guess I’ll never learn. 🙂
But…. He is talking about Compressor 2. I only have the on-line manual for Compressor 2 and there’s nothing called Stream Usage anywhere in the index or from a search (page 185 in the C2 manual is about filters). The only option I’ve ever found about Transport Streams is the button for muxing. Am I totally missing it, or are you talking about Compressor 3 (which he isn’t)?

Drats!!! I failed to notice that minor detail.
Well, anyone still using FCS1 is just plain silly in my opinion anyway…

David it gives more access but only a little more for the bitrate it seems.
I want the setting to allow me to set the GOP to whatever number I want and be able to manually configure the mpeg1 layer2 audio settings for an mpeg program stream. (for DGS delivery)
is that possible?

August 6, 2008 at 5:21 pmGOP has only limited manual settings and Audio can be set for mpeg1 layer2 audio settings for an mpeg program stream, but I don’t see any specifics for additional manual settings.

August 6, 2008 at 5:22 pmwow, apparently one can make a copy of a preset and edit it with text edit to get whatever settings you want, even if they are grayed out in compressor.
some people at the apple forum have successfully done it.
cool!

or there is no such in compressor 2?
Thank You
