  Capture issues with 24p (2:3) tried all i could think of.

  Just a quick overview of my equipment I am using:

  Canon XL2 (Recording at 24p 2:3 16:9 Setting)
  Sony HVR-M25U (for capturing)
  Final Cut Pro 5.1.4
  Output is going to be DVD and a .mov file

  I have quite a few hours of 24p footage that was recorded with my Canon XL2 at the 24P 2:3 16:9 setting and have tried any way possible to get the video captured correctly. I was sure that I could just capture the footage at the normal NTSC DV setup but I come up with what looks like horribly interlaced footage. When I look at the captured footage 3 frames look great then the 4th frame is interlaced, and it just continues that way.

  The video is going to be output to DVD so I figured I could just edit the video and deinterlace in in Compressor. But either way it looks nasty. I have read up on the forums all over trying to figure this out but I have either missed something or doing some step completely wrong.

  I have captured in various other ways now, Uncompressed (the video is no longer interlaced & comes in at 23.97fps but its very pixellated.), capturing at 24p & 23.97, & using various other codecs but I cannot capture the video at decent quality no matter what I try. I figured going ahead and putting the footage to DVD would possibly work but its just as bad if not worse most of the time. Of course viewing the tape from the camera or capture deck it looks amazing on my monitor, capturing.. not so great.

  Any help or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.

  David,

  The XL2 does not literally record 24 progressive frames per second to tape, it records a 24p signal onto tape over a standard NTSC 29.97fps interlaced signal. This gives the look of 24p when played back, but the footage is not truly native 24p.

  3:2 pulldown is the term used to describe how a 24fps signal is recorded on 29.97i. Three whole frames are recorded, followed by two frames that are split between two fields. If W=whole and S=split, the pattern (also called a cadence) is WWWSSWWWSSWWWSS, etc. If you record a movie off of an NTSC broadcast, then step through it frame by frame, you will see this same cadence.   The Canon XL2 does not have an Advanced Pulldown mode like the Panasonic cameras. Therefore, Final Cut Pro cannot automatically remove the 3:2 pulldown when capturing footage. You must use Cinema Tools in order to do that with 24p non-Advanced footage.
