I got my new MacPro a couple weeks ago, with two network ports, So I plugged one port into my old G4, just to discover that my G4’s network port got zapped by the storm the previous week. So I discovered that you can use Firewire to network both machines and it worked great for a couple days until I got a PCI network card for the G4 and now it is not working as a network port after hours of fiddling with preferences.. And I discovered on the Apple support sight that Firewire network also shuts down that side of the buss to other firewire devices (nice – explains the HD not showing up)

So my big question, is there any software that fixes or expands on firewire networks???

I liked the idea of having a back-up network between the two machines,,, or is firewire network just to funky for prime time….

Thanks for your thoughts, I am sure I will have a few more Mac Pro 3.2 discoveries to share as the 6 year technology span between the G4 and Mac Pro sinks in….

I think you’ll find your life is much easier if you stick to ethernet for your networking.

A gigabit ethernet card should be pretty cheap these days, and gigabit hubs, routers and switches have all come way down in price. I bet you could get both for around $100, and you’ll have a nice simple network setup with very few hassles.

Plus, you could always add a NAS box or network printer to make your life even easier still!

    Thanks Arnie,

Your response is basically what I thought… But never doing firewire networking, I didn’t know if I had been missing out on some really nice new software or other technologies..

    Appreciate the response.
