    Hi All

Anyone had any success playing 2K files in real time in FCP. Currently with imported DPX sequences in a 2k timeline the best i have got is 2 seconds. Any tips or suggestions that could increases my best time to atleast 2mins?

Hi Liam, you will need a fast enough disk system. This format needs about 300MB/sec (12.2MB per frame x 24) of data rate to keep up.

We are using AJA’s DPXtoQTTranlator to convert the raw DPX fames into a QT RGB clip, then drop the QT clip on the timeline. Plays well with a fast RAID.

Some of us do this all day long, every day –as Robert says, you need better storage, 2K DPX frames need sustained playback in excess of 300 MBps to alleviate issues in with overhead and pre-caching.

My Dulce ProDQ unit rocks at this level of performance 24/7-and I get 2 streams of 2K 23.98 DPX files playing out via my Kona3 in windowed 2048×1080.

And as much as I like the people at AJA and their tools – Bob Monahgon’s Gluetools app is far superior for handling DPX within FCP.

Ah thx Robert works great, i actually did the similar work flow on a previous project just thought it was a little time consuming but yes definitely worth the extra time at this stage. Instead of using AJA DPX to QTT i imported via Gluetools then exported from my timeline 10bit RGB LOG.

So Gary, u are just using DPX straight in your timeline? I use GlueTools also with a 7TB MAXX RAID via eSata and it is reading at 330mb/s and writing at 355MB/s hmm i guess i really am not configuring properly.

Also Gary, i really appreciate your experience on this, as an editor learning this stuff and experimenting really takes time out of my editing so i am absolutely thankful for the help u and others provide.

Go along with Gary here. Glue Tools is the only way to go. That and fast storage, but Glue Tools will make your life much easier. Plus support is excellent

    yes I am,
remember that it is the timeline settings, the raid array and making sure that the windows in FCP are not set to anything larger than 100 % – FCP seems to choke on 2K materials when the viewer and especially the Canvas windows are not set to even divisors of the frame size ( I always have mine set to 25% no matter what – I let the Output monitor show me the signal correctly – I never use the canvas for that either.

thanks for the compliment, it is appreciated.
