How to export 1920*1080 mov files?
Posted by Newton Niu on July 6, 2008 at 6:26 amHi, everyone. My original resources are shot by Panasonic Dvcpro HD with the format 1080i50; 1920*1080; now i log and transfer in Final cut pro, with easy setting as Dvcpro HD 1080i50. It seems everythhing is correct, but the mov files that i get are 1440*1080, instead of 1920*1080. What’s the problem? Are there any other settings that i do wrong?

July 6, 2008 at 11:26 amYour file sizes are correct for DVCPro HD. This is an anamorphic format, just like HDV.
1080i/50 is 1440×1080
1080i/60 is 1280×1080
720 is 960×720
Final Cut Pro automatically stretches the files back out to full raster during playback.

July 6, 2008 at 1:12 pmThank you for your answer, Walter. But still i have some questions. If this is an anamorphic format, then is there a way that i get a normal format? Since when I shot, I shot 16:9 videos and I don’t want to get some 4:3 video files as my result.

They’re not 4:3, they’re still 16:9.

July 6, 2008 at 1:35 pmThanks for the quick reply, but sorry to bother you again. How come a 1440*1080 video is still 16:9? And 1440:1080=4:3=1.33? I am a little confused.

Anamorphic video takes a 16×9 image, squeezes it into and 4×3 frame when recorded, then unsqueezes the image back to 16×9 on the fly for display. It’s just another way of compressing and uncompressing information to save space.

Walter,
Didn’t you mean 1920 x 1080?
Have a wonderful day.

Not in DVCPro HD. 1080i/60 is 1280×1080 then stretched back out to 1920 x 1080 by FCP.
1080i/50 is 1440 x 1080 then stretched back out to 1920 x 1080 by FCP.
HDV is 1440 x 1080 in both formats.

March 12, 2009 at 7:23 amWalter, I am having this same dilemma at the moment.
If I am editing 108050i vision on a 1440 x 1080 timeline sequence, how do I get the 1920 x 1080 file (as you say) that occurs by exporting to a new file from the timeline?
I don’t “play back” to anything from the timeline…I always export to a new file and need that new exported file to be 1920 x 1080. How does FCP stretch anything to 1920 if you are exporting from a 1440 timeline?
Obviously I am new to this and missing something important.
Cheers,
David

August 3, 2011 at 11:35 amI am having the same problem to be honest with you.
I used the SONY Z1 HDV camera and imported the file in the FCP 7 on the 1080i x 1444 spec. Now i have finished editing and i would like to export the movie on the the same format and if possible even higher.
I went on youtube and someone had posted a clip suggesting what should you do to exported for you tube use, however i need to produce a DVD with the best quality that fcp can give and if that is not possible then the original quality which was originally feed in.
Thanks
