changing aspect ratio on export
I’m in a bit of a bind. My latest project was edited in 3:2 (I basically forgot to change the sequence settings… yeah, whoops.) Now I have to deliver an uncompressed .mov to my client who has very strict specs for posting to their site.
Luckily I shot the piece (in standard def) keeping in mind I may want to crop it to 16:9, so there is room at the top and bottom, but I am finding no simple way to export a cropped image to the required specs. Every option I was able to find in QT conversion, Compression and Cleaner all gave me a final output that was either condensed or showed bars. I’m assuming there has to be a way to just lose the top and bottom of the image to fit 3:2 into 16:9 with a crop right. What am I missing here? Any help would be much appreciated.
BTW- the specs I’m supposed to be delivering the piece in are:
612×459 4:3

Let’s back up a minute. Did you shoot 4:3 or 16:9?
Have you tried the letterbox filter?

The piece was shot in 4:3, but it’s now reading at 3:2 in Final Cut – I’m assuming my capture presets were off. Irregardless, what I’m trying to do now is output a 16:9 image that is cropped at the top and bottom to meet the specs listed above. None of the programs I’ve listed seem to allow me to do this. When I used the letterbox filter in Compressor it outputted the black bars which I don’t need. I’m not totally familiar with Compressor however, and wouldn’t be surprised if I missed a step.

Final Cut calls dv 3:2, but we know that really means 4:3 when it’s displayed on a tv monitor.
You need to crop your 4×3 movie to 16×9? Simply use the crop function in Compressor. Did you shoot the footage protecting for this crop?

I’m unaware of Final Cut calling 4:3 by 3:2, please elaborate. The sequence settings give options for both, so what’s the difference?
I did leave room for cropping but am unfamiliar with how to get the crop function to work for me in Compressor, especially with such specific dimensions as 612×345. I made an effort in QT Conversion, but for some reason it didn’t take. Any simple directions for this in Compressor would be much appreciated (excuse me if this seems remedial, compressions are just not my thing… yet.)
