I am using an HVX 200 recording sometimes to P2 and sometimes to FS-100. I have a medium high end Mac Pro. I have my HD footage on external drives with a FW800 I/O.
The last few years I have been almost entirely shooting for SD with the HVX but I am now shooting my first documentaries in 1080i.
Question: When I bring footage into FCP (v6.0.3) and put it on the timeline it always has a red render bar over it. This is when I respond YES to the import warning for the sequence “Do you want to match the sequence settings with the footage”.
This doesn’t seem right as I will be generating HUGE render files just to see the video regardless of any effects or transitions I might add.
This can’t be right. If anyone can tell me how to do this I would appreciate it.
(I also have been shooting some stuff using a little Panasonic palm camera that records to little chips as AVCHD. When I import footage from it I have learned to bring it in as Apple Intermediate Codec and it goes right on the timeline ready to edit…)

Are you correctly using the Log and Transfer option in FCP to import your footage from the P2 card?

    Brian,

You have to make sure that your sequence setting matches your footage. The easiest way is to select Easy Setup in FCP.

If you can, convert your avchd footage to match your DVCPro HD footage.

Thanks for the quick reply. But. Perhaps you could amplify a little about what you mean “correct”. I don’t see any options for the Log and Transfer input when bringing in P2. What am I missing there?

Now regarding the FS-100, I will say that I have been recording in the field as Quicktime. Then I transfer these files to my workstation hard drive by just dragging them over from FS-100 (hard drive) to my FW800 drives like one would do any other file copy. Perhaps that is not advised…

Regardless, neither the P2 files nor the FS-100 Quicktime files go on the sequence timeline w/o the red render bar. The Sequence is set to:
    Frame size 1280 x 1080
    Pixel aspect 1280 x 1080
    Compressor DVCPro HD 1080i60
The Video Processing tab is defaulting to “Render in 8 bit YUV”

Well, I brought it (the AVCHD footage) out of the camera to the hard drive as “Apple Intermediate” and it actually works that way in the timeline w/o needing to render. Isn’t that what I want?

THis is how you properly import Panasonic P2 footage into FCP, if you used P2 cards and the option on the firestore to record as P2:

    P2 Workflow with FCP 6

If you used the firestore to record as Quicktimes…then those should be copied to your media drive, then imported by simply using the FILE>Import>Files option.

There are other options, but this is the most straight forward.

What is the best way to import QT files that were recorded by a Panasonic P2 camera into FCP? I have a little issue. The files show up in the folder as 5 seperate clips yet is was recorded as one segment. Using the log and transfer doesnt seem to work with QT files and I still need a way to log the footage. Any help would be great!
