  • External video playback displays only when paused or scrubbed

Posted by Adam Yeremian on June 24, 2008 at 8:10 pm

I am using a Sony DSR-11 deck connected to my computer through firewire and to my Samsung Digital Television using A/V components.
The external video display seems to work only when my playhead is paused or when I scrub around on the timeline. It does not display playback in real time when I press the play button or spacebar.

I have made sure that all my settings and preferences are working properly and still can not find a solution to this problem.

    Thank you in advance,
    Adam

Check under the “View” menu that the “External Video” submenu that “all frames” is checked. Or you can try “apple key” f12.

You must have your external video on if you are seeing some frames. What you describe happens when the sequence video settings and the output device settings don’t match.

Using firewire, you can only send DV video, so check that’s what the sequence uses. Try capturing again from your camera, and dropping this capture into a new EMPTY timeline/sequence. When FCP asks if you want to match the sequence settings to the clip settings, hit ‘yes’.

Make sure this plays ok – if it does, either compare the sequence settings here to your other sequence, or just copy and paste all the clips from your ‘bad’ sequence into this new one.

    Hope that helps.

    Ben

having a sequence at 30 fps instead of 29.97 fps does this as well.
