Animation of the tail of a fish
Posted by Helmuth E. guenther on May 1, 2007 at 8:41 amHi,
I got a Photoshop picture from a fish in the Red Sea. The fish is separated in one plane. In After Effects I did some simple animation; e.g. the fish is swimming by usig scale and position.
To make it more realistic I would like to animnate the tail of the fish by moving the tail left and right. But HOW?
I appreciate any hint!
Regards
Helmuth

May 1, 2007 at 12:53 pmHey Helmuth,
I animated a fish a couple of times. And i simple used the Bezier warp effects and animated the tail this way. Its maby not the perfect one, because you distort a bit of the fish body aswell. But i had always some had resultes with it…I takes some time do.

May 1, 2007 at 1:10 pmYou could separate the tail and the body by duplicating the layer and using masks, then animate them independently.

May 1, 2007 at 5:29 pmGive Distort>CC Bender (Not Bend It, it’s a pain) a try. Put the Base at the base of the tail and Top at the tip, then Animate the Amount, three keyframes for one wiggle cycle, then add this loop expression (Alt click the Amount stop watch and Paste in the expression):
loopOut(“cycle”, 0)
for continuous tail wiggle.
You might have to Grow Bounds (Image Control on AE6.5 but somewhere else on 7 and CS3), if your bend puts the tail beyond the layer’s edge.

Thanks again!

This is understood so far.
At present I don’t know how to bend the tail in the separate layer.
Thanks again!

May 2, 2007 at 6:13 pmPut “Bend It” on the layer you want to bend, if the tail is on a separate layer, put the effect there. Move the “Top” and “Base” to the tip of the tail and base of the tail respectively, then animate the Amount. You’ll get the hang of it with a little experimentation.
