Cannot save file on FCP
Posted by Joe Zurlo on June 16, 2008 at 10:54 pmHello, I use Final Cut Studio 2, edited a short video piece, went to save and got the message “File Error: Specified File is locked”, (never have gotten this message before). I tried a few times, deleting file and logging/capturing.. Got info on all the files and none were locked, repaired permissions, no one else uses the computer, I’m the administrator, etc… Anyone else have this message when trying to save a file and if so how do I remedy it. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

June 17, 2008 at 1:25 amIt is a permissions thing, if you are working off another drive that is not your boot volume, maybe ignore permissions on the volume(10.4) or propagate permissions(10.5). Can you “Save As…”?

June 17, 2008 at 2:00 amMichael, thanks for the reply. Clicked ignore permissions, didn’t work. I cannot “save” or “save as”, when I quit FCP it asks do I want to save but still gives me the same error message. I can’t figure out why this is happening now. Thanks again!

June 17, 2008 at 5:27 pmDoes this happen in any other user? If you don’t have one, create a new user in System Prefs and do the same thing logged in there. A “default” is a good control for testing purposes.

June 21, 2008 at 3:37 amOnce again Michael thanks for the advice, still no go. Let me explain what I’m working with so you know what I’m using. Have three hard drives, drive 2 only handles Final Cut Studio, but the projects all get saved to my Lacie. Never had this problem before with other projects. I thought maybe it was the Lacie, so when I “save as” I chose drive 2 instead, same error message. So it must be the project file itself that is causing the trouble. So frustrating it is, I recently used Dick Warrior on Drive 2, could this have changed something? Once again, any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Very bad idea. Never ever save your project files to a media array. These should be saved to your internal Mac HD. The drives most likely to fail at any given time are your media drives because they are being pushed all the time with media captures and playback. This is why we always recommend you save your Project Files to your internal drive.
Are all of your drives formatted for Mac OS Extended (NOT Journaled) and did you re-format them before you started using them, or did you just turn them on and start using them right out of the box?

June 21, 2008 at 10:49 pmWalter, thank you for the advice. Drive 2 is an internal drive that handles nothing but Final Cut Studio, I reformatted them after installing and after clicking “Get Info” on Drive 2, it is indeed Journaled not Extended. I switched the scratch disc to Drive 2, tried to save and same error message. Must I reinstall everything on Drive 2? Hope not, but if needs be. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
