  • Should I sell my powerPC G5 for Macbook Pro?

Posted by Bobby Miller on June 6, 2008 at 7:19 am

    Hey guys,

So, I currently have a PPC PowerMac G5 dual 2.5ghz desktop. It’s got 4gb of ram, etc. etc. I also have a Macbook intel 1.83ghz core duo with 2gb of ram.

Recently, I’ve been doing a lot of editing work outside of my house and also have been realizing my PowerMac G5 is getting kinda old. I was wondering if perhaps I should go ahead and sell both computers and get a Macbook Pro.(I’m contemplating the two 15 inch models)

Will the Macbook pro 2.4 or 2.5ghz models run faster than my powermac?

I’ve got a G5 Dual 2Gbs with 4Gb RAM. My MBP 2.4 Core 2 Duo, runs much, much faster.
I think that renders and compress in almost half of the time. Probably with your G5 Dual 2.5 will be a bit less difference, but I think will still be faster.

Bobby, get your self a 17″ with High Resolution Screen. Even when working with a second screen, you will notice the difference. You will miss it if you start to work with HD.

    Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
    G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
    PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
    JVC DTV-17″
    SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.

I edit on a MBP 2.4 GHz Core 2 Duo with 4GB Ram, and yes I got the HD screen option (a must).

Would be happy to answer any questions.

Another yes. Sell them both and get an MBP (if you don’t want a MacPro). When I first got my intel laptop, it ran circles around my dual 2.0 G5 and this was more than a year ago. There have been a couple MBP updates since then, including faster processors. Also, if you want to stay current, development is really being tuned towards intel processors/Leopard rather than PPC.

You guys are awesome, thanks for all the responses.

Someone pointed me in the direction of an application called geekbench that runs performance tests on your machine and spits out a score. I’d be really curious if any of you with a macbook pro ran the test. It seems they score in the 3,000 range.

My macbook 1.83 Intel Core Duo with 2gb ram and Mac OS 10.4.11 scores around a 2379.

Whereas my PowerMac G5 (June 2004 with Dual 2.5ghz and 4gb of ram – same operating system) scores around a 2201:

So, I guess my macbook is already marginally faster than my G5!

I’ll have to take a look at the 17 inch, but I’m really skeptical about getting something that big. It also is a jump in price…and I was hoping to not have to spend money. (I also wonder how hard it is to sell the computers I have.)

On the plus side, I’m a student, so there’s a knock in price and a free ipod I could sell. But, still..

    Bobby,

I have a 2 gig G5 Power PC and a 2.4 ghz MBP, MUCH faster. I still have the G5 hooked up to my Beta deck and Kona LH but mostly just use it for SD and dubbs. The MBP has a Firmtek 2 drawer RAID on it, just fantastic. Sell the old, yes.

    Have a wonderful day.

    Hi Bobby,
I’m still having my Ti-Book 15″. When I sow the 17″ I thought the same than you: Too big. What a monster..But if I would have bought the 15″ instead of the 17″ I would be telling my self “idiot” everyday.

I’m downloading the “Geekbench”. I’l run a test in the MBP and let you know.

If I’m not wrong, by June 2004 the G5 had not yet 2.5ghz.
