URGENT need help
Posted by David Neidert on June 3, 2008 at 8:19 pmI am trying to output a last min 4:3 version of a 16:9 project. I am using compressor. I am sending a H.264 quicktime file. I put a letter box on it and output with a 720 x 480 setting but the footage is still squeezed a little it isn’t terrible but it isn’t good either. What do I do to get the letter box to look good while still having a 4:3 frame? I can’t seem to get any settings right and this has to be done immediately. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

How exactly did you do that? To help you we must know what did if you want us to correct it…

June 3, 2008 at 8:25 pmI brought the footage into compressor straight from FCP. I choose the quicktime present, added a letter box filter and then in the geometry tab changed the dimensions of the frame to 720 x 480. Sorry I wasn’t clearer to begin with.
Thanks,
David

June 3, 2008 at 8:30 pmAlso… Its squeezed horizontally not vertically. It seems like it is not completely scaling it into the letter box.

June 3, 2008 at 8:45 pmIf it’s a 16×9 Sd project, you simply being in the movie, and in the gemotery tab add padding (they have presets for 16×9) or simply change the output frame size to something 16×9 such as 640×360.

June 3, 2008 at 8:56 pmI do this all the time and I’m suddenly encountering a slight vertcal squeeze.
I definitely don’t think you need the filter BTW in addition to changing th easpect ratio in the geometry tab.
I’m still trying to see what’s cooking…

June 3, 2008 at 9:00 pmI dropped the filter and I added a custom padding of about 50 on the top and bottom. It eliminates most of the issue I think. Post if you can figure out the problem. It is a subtle difference but still somewhat noticeable. It isn’t terrible on b-roll WS but interviews you can definitely tell.
Let me know

June 3, 2008 at 9:19 pmIn the encoder tab:
Crop to: Custom (with zeros in all four places)
Frame size: 720×480
Pixel Aspect: Default for size
Padding: 16×9 1/78:1 (should be 60 top and 60 bottom)

June 3, 2008 at 10:04 pmYuck!!! Sorry to step on your toes big fella…
I had my head so buried in that problem I didn’t see your post. Its was really confounding me, because it seems my SOP with Compressor was suddenly not working as expected.

June 3, 2008 at 10:22 pmOh dude. No worries at all. I was beginning to think that no one could hear me.
It’s okay, I’m used to it.
