DISK WARRIOR to defrag main internal hard drive- FCP
Does anyone know of any issues using Disk Warrior to Defrage my 3.5 TB internal drive. This is a MAC 8 core, 4 gb memory, FCP 6.0 with upgrades. We’ve started to get “hiccups” loading our DVCPRO HD tapes- namely jittery scenes, stop and starting of the shots; this just started up after days of loading; we took the same shots and loaded onto my external firewire 800 GRAID drives- no problem, they looked fine; So we feel a good De-fragging is the thing to do, to the big drive.
Does anyone know of any drawback in doing this?Thanks

Disk Warrior doesn’t actually defrag hard drives, it repairs and rebuilds directories using data revovered from the original directory. That is very much different from defragging. That is not to say it may not be beneficial to your present problems. It may well help. I use it regularly on all of my drives, including my 4-bay 2Tb Raid.
As far as Disk Warrior causing issues with Raid-0 created using Apple Disk Utility, no ther earen’t any so long as you are not using the old version 3.3 under Leopard. Leopard requires Disk Warrior version 4.

you don’t need to de-fragment with MacOX. As long as there is free memory enough, the system know how to manage.
As David says, DW will rebuild your directories. That’s really important in a Unix based.
I use it every two weeks or so. As soon as I run it my HDs speed up at least a 25%..

PS one other question. Doing a 1080 23.98p timeline right now; incoporating 72059.94p footage- most slo-mo; should I be up-converting 720 to 1080p either in the machine, or through the KONA card before I import. Kona’s not really letting me do it, right now; but I thought it should make for a cleaner up-convert, than having FCP’s software do it.

That is true on the system drive but I do not believe that it applies to any other drive connected to the machine
How full is the drive it is quite possible that that may be the cause of the issues.
If you still wish to defray look into Drive Genius.
There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.

Yeap. I agree with you Zane. But much easier, faster, and with less risk is just to back-up and erase. A full cleaning of the disk every three months or so.
I bought IDefrag few years ago.
The first time I tried with my G5’s second HD.
When I sow how long that would take, I tried to cancel the process.
Yes, there was a button “Stop” “Cancel” “Pause” or so.
And I clicked it.

Are too many old projets, cluttering up the drives; best to clear off drives each time?

Just wondering about your advice to Peter…I have 2 5xBurley enclosures with 10 Seagates, all working as Raid 0. I am within days of completing my project and I’ve been apprehensive about using DW on my raid 0 array. Is it suggested that I do so? If so, do you have DW select just the raid icon and “not” individual drives? I’m pretty sure I know the answer, just a bit timid to try it. Sorry for the basic question.

Yes, just select the raid and fire away. And, make usre if you have Leopard installed that you have DW 4.
