HD 25fps – 29.97fps frame rate best conversion
Posted by Peter Lee-jones on May 29, 2008 at 10:03 pmHi CC FCP,
What are the best settings to convert HDCAM footage from 25 to 29.97 fps using Compressor. Should I use frame blending?
What happens to the sound? Does it need stretching in ProTools

May 30, 2008 at 2:49 amHave you considered just conforming it to 23.98 in Cinema Tools?

May 30, 2008 at 11:44 am[PETER LEE-JONES] “Why would I want to go to 23.98?
My delivery format is 29.97 “Because that is the standard method for converting between the NTSC and PAL frame rates.
by conforming the the clip in CT to 23.98, and then adding pulldown to get your output to 29.97- you can achieve the conversion. It will not be as accurate as going through a teranex, but it does work.

May 30, 2008 at 5:41 pmThere is a caveat to the 25 to 23.98 conform process. Your TRT will grow by 4% and your audio with shift in pitch.
A quick way to pitch correct the audio is to conform the video, note the new TRT. Take the 25fps audio into soundtrack and use the time stretch process. Enter in the new TRT, render and output.

May 30, 2008 at 6:14 pmWe found a good way to do this.
Playout the program as 25p
then convert the SRW5500 to 29.97
then digitise into FCP 29.97 and time stretch the picture at 83.33%
Our films are onlythe reason for this is we have Dolby surround sound which must not be corrupted.
Then master onto SRW5500

May 30, 2008 at 8:08 pmI believe that the 5500 can playout 25 as 23.98 and pitch correct the audio at the same time. But what that would do to your audio encode I do not know.
If you found something that works go with it.

October 30, 2009 at 9:39 amHi,
I am having problems converting some footage from 25 to 29.97.
“and then adding pulldown to get your output to 29.97” – Can you explain this a bit more? How do I add a pulldown? Does compressor do this or is there something else I should be doing?
Thanks!
