I couldn’t find a good category to put this in…so, sorry.

I am looking to buy an iMAC and I found a good deal on a 2.8ghz, 24″, but the processor is a “Core 2 Extreme” instead of “Duo”.

I have researched and can’t really figure this whole “Core 2 Extreme” thing out. It looks like Intel’s “Extreme” processors are not really being used by Apple anymore in any of their new iMACs or Mac Pros.

Does anyone know why? I have no idea, but since it seems that none of the new Macs come with the “Core 2 Extreme” now, is it safe to assume that I should stay away from those and fork out a couple hundred bucks extra to get the “Core 2 Duo” with pretty much all the same specs as the one that I’m looking at with the “Core 2 Extreme” ???

Thanks guys, any insight would be greatly appreciated!

    Adam

Apple NEVER used a processor called a Core 2 Extreme.

I’m betting the guy with the “deal” does not know what he is talking about.

    Zane,

Thanks for the reply. The “deal” I was speaking of is actually here:
    https://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID?sf=wHF2F2PHCCCX72KDY&nclm=CertifiedMac&mco=MTE3NjY

    It’s a refurbished iMAC from mac.com

From my research, all I could really find is that when Apple put out the 2.4ghz iMAC (Core 2 Duo) back in 2006, shortly after, they put out the 2.8ghz iMAC Core 2 ‘Extreme’. And I haven’t really seen it since then. I found articles from ’06 when it first came out comparing the Duo with the Extreme, but now I can’t find the Extreme anywhere.

So I guess this refurbished iMAC is one of those from ’06 when they first starting putting out 2.8ghz iMACs. Does that sound right?

If so, seems like a good idea to spend an extra $250 for the tried and tested “Duo”, right? So confusing…

Its a typo. That machine is simply a referb of the current model iMac.

Same than Zane. Never heard about the “Extreem”. If you can afford the difference, don’t complicate your life and go for the “Core2 Duo”.

    Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
    G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
    PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
    JVC DTV-17″
    SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.

    Thanks for the insight…

    But I’m still so confused.

Intel does indeed make a “Core 2 Extreme” processor (it’s part of the Core 2 processor line), you can see that here:
    https://www.intel.com/products/desktop/processors/index.htm?iid=processors_body+dt_core

And I googled — imac “core 2 extreme” — and pulled up 8 sellers who are selling the same 2.8ghz, 24″, Core 2 Extreme iMAC. Sellers are B&H, Pro Audio Solutions, PC Connection, etc, companies who surely aren’t making the same “typo”. And they all cost around $2300 from those sellers, so they must be new, which means Apple must still be making them??? Or are they leftovers from some failed product line back in 2006?

I just can’t figure out why nobody knows what Core 2 Extreme is…?

Zane, I just posted this responding to another guy’s comment, but wanted to make sure you got it too…

Not sure why you are putting yourself through this, if the system meets your need just buy it. Don’t believe iMac were that fast or had that video card in 2006.

I would like to think that I’m not being over-dramatic. I mean, if you were on the verge of tossing $2000 at a new MAC, and one of the specs on your new machine was something that you’d never even heard of, you’d be cautious too. 🙂

And just the fact that it’s labeled “Extreme” makes me think it’s geared for gaming or something that I don’t want.

I am simply trying to NOT end up with a machine that will surprise me in a bad way. And it’s becoming increasingly difficult to find out what this particular MAC has to offer, or lacks, in that regard.

I am just hoping that someone out there actually knows what the “Core 2 Extreme” difference is compared to the “Core 2 Duo”

    Cheers,

    Adam

I never said that Intel was not making a processor called that, I just said that Apple is not using them.
