  • Artifacts when blurring edges on a map

Posted by Coulter Mitchell on May 21, 2008 at 2:01 pm

I’m using FCP 5.0.4 on a G4 running 10.4.6. I shot a sequence at night, and I’m trying to composite two layers together (a face and the moon) over a black piece of slug. The backgrounds are the same color. However, when I put a mask on and blur the edges, it leaves gray gradients artifacts (stripes). Is there any way to get rid of these artifacts?

how are you “blurring” the edges of the mask? are you applying a blur filter or the Mask Feather?

Have you tried working with Uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2? Solves all my banding issues.

I’m using the edge feather on the mask.

    What does this mean?

First try this: Change the zoom magnification on your Canvas to 100%. How does your image look now? If you still see a banding problem, it is probably because you are working with DV.

Uncompressed is a video format with, well, no compression. As compared to DV, which is compressed about 5:1. When you have compression, you will see artifacts in all gradients. A feathered edge is derived from a gradient, so you will see artifacts in a feathered edge in a DV timeline. Makes sense?

If you worked in an uncompressed 10 bit timeline, you would not see the banding (artifacts). If you don’t want any banding in your gradients (feathered edges, especially on black), you need to work with a higher quality timeline (sequence). To try this, go to Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup and choose 10 Bit Uncompressed. Make a new sequence, then copy/paste the clips from your original sequence into the new uncompressed one. Artifacts should no longer be present. Render > then output to tape or create your file for DVD or the web.
