Time Code OUT on FCP
Hi
I’m looking for a good system to have a TC output with playouts.
I’ve to do some playouts with the original TC of my QT’s on the tape.
I know that you can put a TC on an audio track and use it like a TC output
But how can I extract the original TC of my QT’s and put it on his audio track?Tx

To extract the TC is not difficult:
Open the file with QT.
Comm-J (Properties)
Now you have:
– Video track
– Audio Track
– Time-code track.
Click TC track and click the “Extract” window.
Now you will have the TC track alone.
Anyway I don’t think you can achieve like that what you intend to do.
In the VTR’s world the LTC is a signal (a string of pulses) that is recorded in an audio track.
To record TC in an audio track is as easy as plug the TC IN in an Audio IN.
How to do that in a QT file? No idea.
Probably QT identify the TC tracks as such TC track. I don’t know haw you can tell QT that that track is audio instead of TC.
If you want to print to video your clips with the same TC of the files you will need a RS-422 device control.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

Tx for your answer but it doesn’t really help me.
When you extract the TC with QT, it’s nice but i can’t import that file in FCP…I’v a rs-422 device control but I don’t understand how it’ll help me…

The usual way to get matching timecode on a tape, when you don’t have timecode out on the source, is to stripe the timecode you want on the tape, then using rs-422 control for the tape deck, insert the video and audio at the proper timecode location on the tape.
In Final Cut this is Edit to Tape.

But i’m looking for a better one,… This solution will take to much time and i’ ve to do this with sometimes 50 different shots
and this every week…. -
How about an RS-422 to LTC Time Code Translator. Maybe you could get RS-422 out of final cut, convert to LTC, and put that to an audio track.
The Horita RLT-50 is such a device.

at this time FCP does not support generating TC out in any form,
whether its LTC, VITC, via an RS422 port or wahtever. which really bites.sooooo
you can “pre stripe” a tape with timecode that would match your clips
OR
you can skip tape entirely and move media around on hard drives which has become a standard mode of operation in a lot of cases.
(all the software peices are out there to generate audio LTC or RS422 LTC from a quicktime file, but nobody has put it together yet. And seeing has how the “Sneakernetting” of .5 and 1 tB hardrives has become the norm, i doubt if anyone will )

and this every week…. “Like what? You can use the ‘Black and Code’ option from within Final Cut to stripe your tape (with starting time code that you specify) and then you assemble edit from there. Shouldn’t take more than 30 seconds to set it up. 30 seconds times 50 means you will spend 25 minutes total setting up your layoffs. Not bad. Or you take the time to pre stripe all of your tapes and when you need to layoff simply insert where you need it.
Also, the ioHD as LTC out although i have never used it for this purpose. I’d have to test and see if it works.
If you give me a more complete picture of your entire workflow, I might be able to help you

I don’t work with VTRs since a long time, but I think that if you just put your VTR to record by REC-PLAY you will get the TC that is coming through the RS-422. I guess you need to put the TC in external. Then Regen or Preset will make no difference. In the moment you’ll set to play your clip from your computer the VTR will start to record the incoming TC.
With FW, at least the machine I work with (DSR-11) you can not do it unless, as Steven pointed, the tape have been striped.
There is application (ShedTools?) that do the opposite that you wants: The TC that have been recorder in audio channel (AUX TC) can be brought to FC and used as source TC.
Also what you want I don’t see to practical. You would end up with a tape with two different TC. One the one set by the VTR in the very TC track and another one, different. in an audio track.
You could use this TC to be read with an external TC reader for off line. But to use this TC as your source TC you would need to set your on-line system in a no standard fashion.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

Thanx for the correction/revision!
I had thought the Kona TV TC out was just visual! So, even though its clip by clip, I can now take p2 files or wahtever, and make tape safetys w matching code!
the next best thing would be some kinda playlist, so all my clips get layed off autoamtically! (but maybe thats why god made interns!)
