    Hello,

I know this topic has been discussed allot and I’ve read endless threads on this but still havent solved my problem. Hope somone can help

I’m working in After effects and I have recieved some footage from my editor that was shot on a DVX-100 in 24pA/Advanced mode. He is cutting this commercial in FCP on a (23.98) Advanced pulldown timeline. He has exported the commercial to me and wants me to add a motion graphics tag on the end and add some color correction to the video. The final product will be for regular NTSC 29.97.

When I inspect the footage in my A.E project window it tells me that it is:

    720X480, Non-square (1.21.1)
    23.976 fps

When I try to interpret the footage with both the guess 3:2 pull down, and the guess 24pA pulldown I still see the interlace lines and the video is very jerkey.

My question is: What should my comp settings be for my graphics to be composited and rendered back to him as one QT movie on this 24pA timline in FCP?

    Hope somone can help.

if the footage you have is really 23.976, then there should be no fields and no pulldown to remove.

24pa is a cadence that is used when the 24fps footage is recorded at 29.97 to tape.

i have a feeling that the footage was incorrectly converted back to 24p from 24pa. the hvx will shoot 24p straight, but if you have to shoot to tape a pulldown will be needed to get it to 29.97. the pulldown should then be removed when captured or at least before editing. this may not have been done, but by what you are saying, i think it is more likely that it was done incorrectly.

do you know if the tape was captured as a complete tape and then cut, or was each shot captured individually? when shooting with a pulldown, each shot should be captured individually to be able to remove the pulldown. and i believe this is true for advanced pulldown too.

    Thanks for your hlep!

Well then I think I’m just going to send him the greaphics and he can drop them into
FCP. Do you know what my comp settings would be if I want to render graphics for his
    24p Advanced Timline?

Dave thank you so much buddy!

You seem to have a good grasp on this topic. I think what I’ll do is render the graphics for him to drop onto his FCP timline. Unfortunatly I’ve already created my graphics at 29.97.
So what I’m going to do is have him copy and past the clips from his 24p/A timline into a
29.97 timline. Then drop my graphics into that 29.97 timline. Will FCP be able to do this?

    Thanks Dave

it sounded like the footage was 720×480 widescreen (pixel aspect 1.2), so you can use the dv widescreen/23.976 comp preset should match.

i think when you render you will need to render as 23.976 progressive, you can add a pulldown in the render settings by setting it to render at a frame rate of 29.97, selecting lower field render and setting a pulldown cadence… however, there is not a option for the advanced pulldown cadence, at least not on my machine. panasonic may have something or a workaround, since they developed the advanced pulldown.

[Dave LaRonde] “FCP CAN NOT do what you hope it can do. The editor can’t simply paste clips at one frame rate into a timeline with a different frame rate. Doesn’t work that way.”

At least not until Final Cut Pro 6 =O
