I’ve been pondering the need of house sync in my home studio. wether or not it is needed.

(Mac Octo 3.2, Kona LHe, 6tb eSata storage, JVC DV-24L1, Mackie 1202-VLZ3… …)

To date most of the projects i’ve been pushing through here have been either supplied on hard drives or captured via various firewire decks, mastered back to tape at the studio.

I’ve recently come across a few clients with higher-end format needs (DigiBeta, HDCam) and am currently capturing, as I type, without issue via SDI/Kona from a DVW-A500.

I am breaking away from the studio I have been doing most of my work from, where everything is tied to house sync. My concern with my home studio is mastering back to tape via the Kona card to either dibibeta or hdcam. I’m not transferring via any patch panel/routing switcher or tape to tape, I’ll always go direct from kona to deck via SDI.
Should I be tying everything to external sync (Deck, Kona LHe, JVC DV-V24L1 Display.) If so, what cost effective sync solutions are others with home studios using?

I’ve been eyeing a Horita BSG-50 Multi Output. As attractive this is in price, it limits me to 29.97….

    Any thoughts/suggestions?

    Cheers,

    Colin,

You need tri-level sync for HD. As I’m sure many will agree, the AJA Gen 10 at just under $300 is perhaps the best deal on the market.

    Wow,
Well, that definitely trumps the Horita I was looking at! ’bout the same ballpark price for so much more!

    Very nice,
    Cheers!

[David Roth Weiss] “the AJA Gen 10 at just under $300 is perhaps the best deal on the market.”

Hey David, don’t you mean just under $400.00?

Where can you get them for less than $300.00? They are sold without a power supply and usually at $350.00 – $390.00 so they come in around $390.00 with power for the best I’ve seen. Even still that is the best deal out there by a long shot.

You’re right, I forgot that all the little AJA boxes get quoted without the power supply.

Also, the place I checked for the latest price was, uh oh, Promax of all places. Yikes!!!

‘Nuvver vote for the Gen10. It does exactly what it says on the tin, and I’ve sync’d Digi, Beta SP, DVCPro, HDCam with it, all to my Multibridge Pro, with sync to spare for monitor etc. Brill.

No wonder they couldn’t stay in business! 😉

B&H has them for $350 + $40 for the power supply (sold separately, and useless w/o one!).

Now we know the rest of the story… It was their pricing on the Gen 10 ($273.00 without PS) that put them out of business.

What’s interesting (as in stupid) is that B&H stocks the Gen10 & other little AJA boxes, but they don’t stock the power supply- it’s special order!

[Arnie Schlissel] ” but they don’t stock the power supply- it’s special order!”

Maybe they assume we all have the aja or other rack mount power supply with the 10 or 12 ps’s built in.
With what B&H knows about marketing it should be a pop-up order option when you look at the sync box.

    Arnie,

Actually they do stock one type of power supply, you can use this one:

    https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/259995-REG/AJA_DWP12V_DWP12V_Power_Supply_for.html

It’s 12VDC, the GEN10 accepts 5-18VDC as do most AJA Mini Converters so you can use them with an Anton Bauer power source.

    Cheers,
