Constant (Automatically) Scrolling Timeline
Hi CC FCP,
Is it possible to make the timeline constantly scroll when playing the sequence? I want the playhead to stay still and the sequence to scroll.
I know I can click on the arrow buttons or zoom in and out while the playhead is moving.
This is so important when you are doing final audio mixes were you need to keep the thumbnail and waveforms of the clip on the timeline at the maximum size. (when you hit play the playhead zooms off the side of the sequence window.)
I have found I can keep the playhead in view by repeatedly zooming in and out as the sequence plays!

Not yet. Something that we’ve asked for, but it’s not been implemented and not sure if it ever will.

Walter, since you are in the ‘loop’ any talk about allowing naming while digitizing? That’s my number one peeve.

Nope, I’m not “in the loop.” Apple has the smallest, most secretive beta team on the planet and I’m not in there, quite frankly don’t want to be in there. If the software is this buggy when it comes out, I don’t want to know what it’s like during testing.
But how would you allow naming while digitizing? I don’t think I’ve ever seen that in an NLE. You would hit Capture Now and then be able to name the clip when it’s done capturing? Not sure I’ve seen that.
You know you can rename the clip in the Browser and FCP will also rename the file on your drive, correct?

Yes, I know you can rename afterward, but AVID allows you to type any name in while digitizing. It wastes so much time doing it afterward. Most of the time, you don’t know that the scene is until it starts.

In FCP it is called Logging. Depending on how fast you can set your in/out, type clip name and scrub, you can have yourself a very efficient and organized capture bin after your tape has been batch captured.

Well, personally I use Capture Now maybe 10% of the time. We Log all our clips before we start capture so we know what the scene is long before we capture it. I find it wastes too much time using Capture Now because then you’re capturing all kinds of stuff you don’t need. Loggging first, capture later is the way I’ve always worked with NLE’s from the get go.

Granted, many of you bigger shops have the luxury of logging first, before digitizing. But, I get tapes in the day of an edit that I have never seen. And I have to grab them on the fly.
But, like I said, it would be ‘nice’ to have the option of typing a name of what you see as you see the clip. Can’t be too hard to incorporate as others have (AVID & Media 100)

Bigger shops? I started out by myself as a single editor. I get the tapes the same day we start the edit. Today we have three edit suites and a staff of three. Two editors, including myself, and a production assistant. I don’t think that’s a very big shop.
We log all our own stuff.

Avid allows naming while doing an on the fly digitze, and it is very handy. But, Avid is a more mature application, and that feature wasn’t implimented until many versions in.
Avid also implimented the scrolling timeline…but quickly removed that feature in later updates. It is too processor intensive and would dramatically decrease the performance of the computer and FCP.

Interesting, didn’t realize they dropped that feature. Wonder if Media 100 dropped it too?
