JPEGs that won’t import
Hi All,
I’m wondering if you can help with a pretty big problem I’m having with FCP6. I am using v6.0.3 and for no apparent reason that I can think of with the exception of a software update (which also messed up my quicktime conversion), FCP will no longer let me import JPEGs. I do not know if this problem is limited to just these types of picture files or whether the problem is wider spread.
This is what happens:
Open Network Server > Work Folder > Copy JPEG onto External Hard Drive
In FCP – File > Import > Import File
The “Choose File” window opens and the JPEG files are in grey and can not be selected.
There is a dropdown menu that has “Show standard files” which I can change
to “show all files” and the jpegs go from grey text to black and are
selectable.If I select one jpeg file and ask it to import a file, an error box opens
instead which reads:“File Error: 1 file(s) recognised, 0 access denied, 1 unknown”
If anyone has any ideas what is going on I would be very appreciative of your thoughts on the matter.

Might be something about those files that are corrupted somehow… can you open them in Photoshop or Preview, and resave them as tiffs or PNG’s or? I’m not having problems with JPEGS here…?

Thank you for your reply. I don’t believe the files are corrupt as I have tried lots of different files and none of them are working.
I can open the jpegs in both preview and photoshop and can re-save them as pngs/tiffs which gets me round the problem. Doesn’t solve it though… :S
Any ideas?

First make sure permissions on drive are correct
Second copy to another location
Third NEVER NEVER use JPEGs for video EVER…. MAJOR compression issuesRichard M. Harrington, PMP

Yeah, I don’t like them either… But sometimes, it’s all you get…
I would check the permissions for sure… but you’re error doesn’t indicate that this is the problem. Other than reinstalling software, I don’t know what to tell ya about the glitch you’re seeing.. cause it’s not a bug, or we’d all see it.
Can you resave the jpeg as a jpeg? then open that copy?

Also, make sure they are RGB format.

Are these jpgs from a PC? I did have an issue once exporting jpgs from a mac that had some metadata that prevented any PC opening them.
Also remember that jpeg is a variable compresion system. There is such a thing as an uncompressed jpeg and you cant say they will have any compression artifacts.
