Windows Media (.wmv) from FCP?
Posted by Josh Sammons on May 7, 2008 at 2:25 amWhat are you guys using to please those difficult windows clients who refuse to install Quicktime? Once again, I am in need of a good .wmv encoder preferably straight out of FCP. I could use Cleaner but I’d rather save a step if I can do it in FCP. I’ve heard of Flip4mac, but it’s expensive. Is it worth it?

May 7, 2008 at 2:39 amI think Cleaner only makes WM7 files and do not support HD.
Flip4Mac compress WM9. Much better picture. You can export from FC, QT or even Compressor.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
JVC DTV-17″
SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table. -

May 7, 2008 at 3:28 amAs noted quite frequently here on this topic, the free download version of Flip4Mac allows only 30 sec of WMV export. For more than that you have to purchase WMV Studio ($49) or above.

May 7, 2008 at 3:30 amYes Flip4Mac
BUT I also just discovered: Visualhub: https://www.techspansion.com/visualhub/
Does not only Windows Media but a lot of other flavors as well. And its cheaper 🙂
One does it all!

May 7, 2008 at 1:01 pmThanks for all the advice. Looking at the Flip4Mac site again, it’s not as expensive as I had thought. $180 isn’t bad for the ability to encode straight out of FCP.
VisualHub looks like a pretty good flash encoder, as well as some other formats like you mentioned, so thanks!

May 7, 2008 at 2:19 pmSorenson squeeze is all you need. Flash, Mpeg4, WMV or whatever format you need for those pesky clients who just won’t upgrade their systems. You’ll have to export an uncompressed QT file of your project in FCP, and then drag that QT file to the stage in Sorenson Squeeze.

Enjoy!
