ive got 1gb of sdram, 1mb l3 cache, 1ghz powerpc g4 titanium powerbook running mac os x, no other programs running, final cut 4 open, and when i try to copy and paste, my fcp freezes up, and runs my computer out of memory, ive tried resetting my pram, restarting my computer, restarting final cut, deleating my cahce, deleting my preferences, and nothing helped. FCP 4 is still freezing up, and crashing my memory, ive got nearly 13 gbs free on my 80gb hard drive, i cant figure out whats going on or what to do next, any suggestions?
I can import clips, and play them back just fine, rendering is taking about normal amounts of time, but copying pasting and making freeze frames (all vital to my current project) are taking forever if even getting processed.

I also tried exporting the clip i was trying to render, and importing it and copying that thinking maybe my copy paste issue (which just started) and no i havent upgraded anything,
well actually i installed msn messanger last night, before the issue, so i just deleted it, and will restart my computer and see if it makes a difference

by the way, i did a search for this subject as well, and the last 7 or so topics on this subject the fix action was “please do a search for this topic in our fourms”

Have you ever done a search in this forum? Its increadibly difficult. Not to mention as frustrating as having fcp crash trying to edit, when you spend a good hour searching a forum for an answer only to find the answer is “keep searching the forum” in the time it took you all to reply, you could have answerd the question or posted a link to the thread you answered in.

I am well aware it is equally as frustrating for you all the professionals to answer the same questions by us new users “all the time” but you know what? isnt that your job as forum mods? Do you get paid to be on here or am i wrong? And if you dont get paid, why be a troll? Just because you know how to do everything, and are elitist doesnt mean you have to treat everyone else like pond scum.

Forgive me if i do not know why my computer is running out of memory, and my manual doesnt tell me how to fix it, forgive me for asking people who have tackeled this issue a thousand times to give me pointers on how to fix it. I suppose ill just go and tinker with my project on my own like you all do so well, and someday ill be a forum moderator on creative cow just like you!!!

    Thanks creative cow!!!

Final Cut Pro requires at least 2GB of RAM to run properly.

As for Searching this forum, not sure what keywords you’re using, but I generally find what I’m looking for in 5 minutes or less.

thanks walter, im not sure why you are up and on this forum so late, but thanks, you are the only one i can count on for a straight answer,

if i had tons of money i would pay you for your answers, maybe when i hit the lottery youll have to give me your address.

however, fcp4 which is what i am using has been working just fine up until yesterday night, when i installed msn messanger, i have since deleted this program, and restarted my computer, deleted my caches, my prefferencs, my saved files, my rendered files, everything, re-opened fcp, no dice, still spinning wheel of death, then crash “out of memory”

im doing searches for memory error and out of memory, since thats the error message im getting and i dont know what else it would be called, and im not comming up with any solutions, i may have to *gasp* go to google for this issue.

ide hate to have to uninstall and reinstall fcp4 on my computer, but if i cant find a fix soon, i might try it

    heres another tip
this happened when i tried to use unlimited rt, i was using safe rt, when i switched over i got problems, apparently my computer is not fast enough to run unlimited rt in such a high quality, and maybe something got corrupted? how would i fix that? i already deleted anything assiciated with the project. Now i cant even open my sequence. It figures this had to happen now, im running out of time to finish this project.

trashing your prefs will reset fcp to Safe RT in your timeline. Unlimited RT will make FCP try to play back everything in the timeline and this can lead to stalls and crashes when the system is not able to handle it.

In an earlier post Walter said something apposite to your problem, but I guess you missed it…

‘Final Cut Pro requires at least 2GB of RAM to run properly.’

    thats 2, yes 2, not 1 but 2!!!

I think you’ve been lucky so far. You’ve got away with running FCP on a barely adequate machine. Now, for some reason, it’s had enough…have you checked your RAM is still OK? Can you stump for another 1Gig from Crucial?

Failing that I’d try stripping your project of all but essentials. Can you make a new project containing just the sequences you need? Try and see if that helps.

One last thing. Your second post. To me, you sound like a whiny kid whose about to throw their rattles out of the pram. I appreciate your frustration in being unable to sort a problem out, but realise that this is a FREE forum. It ain’t a tech support service – it’s a forum. The moderators are here to help and guide, and they may well get paid to do it, but they aren’t at our beck and call. So with that in mind, re-read that post, imagining you’re a COW leader. Or even one of the herd. Would you want to help someone like that?

Now, if there’s any other way we can help, we will…

I wasn’t sure whether you were or weren’t – but in that case, kudos to you all.

You have your HD full. 13 GB free may be not enough even for the System Virtual Memory.
Have a look in the Activity Monitor> System Memory> VM Size:????
Click to see “All Processes” and have a look how much memory needs each of the open processes.
I have 30GB of Virtual Memory only with Safari open.
Apart of that you can have caches or temporal files eating HD.
Clean your caches (Maintenance3) and get more HD.

    Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1
    G5 2x2Gh 4GbRAM-BlackMagic Extreme
    PMBP 17″Core2Duo 4GbRAM-AJA ioHD
    JVC DTV-17″
    SONY EX-1 . SONY PD170
..and always a big mess on top of the table.
