trashing preferences
Hi All:
I am sure this has been discussed before, but what is the process fro trashing preferences? -

Find the preference file & drag it to the Trash!
You can find your prefs by going to HD > User > USERNAME > Library > Preferences > Final Cut Pro User Data.
Or, take a look at FCP Rescue that will let you save a known good copy of your prefs and restore them with two clicks.

Yes, many times. Just search ‘trash prefs’ or “trash preferences” in the Search function.

I know the TrashPref’s question is an almost-daily annoyance on this forum, but…
Did anyone else recently see something about a new Trash Preferences utility? I’ve been using the old, free FCP Attic from Chesapeake Computing, quite happily, but for some reason this new utility seemed pretty interesting — perhaps for saving a choice of pref’s??

I think the new utility you were referring to is https://www.reinphase.com/en/software/fcp-manager/. Its $99 and does more than trash prefs, it saves multiple versions as well. If I am correct, it allows for just three different separate saved versions at this point. On their website, the $99 cost is not mentioned on the front page, it only shows when making a purchase. The $99 price tag is bad enough, but hiding it is even worse.
Another new alternative to the old standbys is https://www.digitalrebellion.com/pref_man.htm , which is freeware and apparently allows users to save unlimited versions of their preferences.

Oops, my bad!!! I went back and did manage to find the price on the front page. It doesn’t stand out very well however.
I’ve been testing Preference Manager (freeware) from DigitalRebellion and I gotta say, its a pretty darned good utility for $0.00 dollars retail…

May I just step onto my high horse here for a moment as ask why in bloody hell has this simple type of functionality not been available in Final Cut for years? That a single set of preferences is still user based and system wide, and not project based is beyond ridiculous.

Don’t dismount Tom… You’re simply stating the absolute truth. If Apple can find the time to add Red One capability, you’d think they could find the time to add a simple and elegant way to manage “project settings,” which is really the term for what’s lacking. That being said, the freeware app from Digital Rebellion that I mentioned above seems a pretty elegant alternative.

very good Zane — I like the “Umm yes.” I should have been more explicit — the one I was trying to remember was the Digital Rebellion “Preference Manager” that DRW mentioned. Has anyone tried this? I am the Timid Guinea Pig now (but hey, I was a Beta Tester for years).
And all you guys on your high horses about project-specific settings — agreed! I have to change the settings for almost every project. But do you think the need for trashing pref’s would go away or be diminished by such a feature?
