After installing Magic Bullet, all video in FCP has suddenly turned black!
I just installed Magic Bullet v1.0 and suddenly Final Cut Pro 6.0 will not play the video from one of my projects anymore. I opened a project I had been working on, right after installing Magic Bullet Looksbuilder (I hadn’t even used it yet), and my video is all black now. I checked all my settings in FCP and they’re as they should be. I uninstalled Magic Bullet using the instructions on their website, and emptied the trash. I quit FCP and opened it again several times, and still the same problem. I restarted my computer, opened FCP, and still, just black where the video should be. FCP will play other video files, though, just not the most recent one I was working on (even if I go back to previous versions of my project from days ago).
Here’s another important part of the story: The video is a file that someone else captured and gave to me to edit. The first time he gave it to me, the file was named “Project-v.mov” and it would not open because I was missing a second file called “Project-v-1”. When I got “Project-v-1” FCP made me locate it on my drive, and the video played fine after that. I was able to get through a rough cut and final cut w/ no problems.
Here’s another strange thing: when I try to play the video file in Quicktime now, Quicktime opens it as an audio file and plays it as a silent audio track. But it’s the same file that used to contain video!
Where the @#$% did my video go?? I’ve never had a file suddenly change its format like this before!!! ????

Strange things are bound to happen when you install an ancient version of a plugin that the manufacturer’s website clearly states does not support Intel Macs or FCP beyond version 5.0.4.
Its sounds as if Magic Bullet may have wiped-out your Quicktime codec. You could try updating Quicktime to see if that helps, but you may be in for a FCP reinstall.

Version 1.0 of Magic Bullet is years old, Anna. In all likelihood, when you installed it, it overwrote your Quicktime files and took you back into the stone age — or perhaps only as far back as the digital Victorian era. Either way, you are probably up the proverbial creek without the assistance of a digital paddle.
You might want to try getting rid of all the Magic Bullet files and then try reinstalling Quicktime. Hopefully that will work.

I think that Anna have installed Magic Bullets Looks, no the old MB Editors.
I’m running MB Looks with FC 6.0.3 and QT 7.4.5 wit no issues.
Even no having problems I would recommend you get out of FC 6.0. Was full of bugs.Mac OX 10.5.2-FC 6.02-QT 7.4.1

Sorry, it’s the newest version of Magic Bullets Looksbuilder that I installed, I was looking at the wrong version number.
And I’m not sure MB Looks is the issue, although it’s suspicious that this happened RIGHT after I installed it. Quicktime will still play all my other video files, just not this one. Does anyone know what’s up with the file “Project-v” needing “Project-v-1” in order to be read by FCP, in the first place? I’m asking because it’s possible that the student who captured the video did not know what he was doing. There was no .mov file extension, and Quicktime wouldn’t play it even before I installed MB Looks. He insisted that the file plays fine on his computer, though, and after he gave me the second file FCP was looking for, I did get FCP to import “Project-v”, after much trouble.
Does this file format sound familiar to anyone? I’m not sure why he didn’t just capture to a .mov.
This is the first problem I’ve had with FCP 6, and I’ve been using it for many, many projects.

Its possible that the student who captured the file did so to a hard drive that was formatted Fat32 instead of Mac Extended. The 4gb file size limitation of FAT32 can cause the video file to be broken into smaller peices during capture with a strange numbering convention.

Oh! Wow, thank you, I had never seen that before. You guys know everything don’t you? I think I’m going to try uninstalling and reinstalling Quicktime now that I’ve wiped out (I hope!) MBLooks. It seems like it installed some sort of codec?
