  • SMPTE TC on audio trk 2, convert audio to TC?

Posted by Steve Covello on April 26, 2008 at 7:07 pm

Back in the day, I used to use Avid, where you could digitize an analog audio tracks with SMPTE TC recorded onto it, then convert the data from sound to TC. this was common with the old “alphasized” 3/4″ decks where dailies would have production audio on Trk 1, then DAT TC on Trk 2, or digitizing a DAT with TC on Trk 2.

My question is whether there is a function in either FCP or Cinema Tools that can accomplish the same thing. I am digitizing 24 tracks of audio via USB, without the benefit of a TC DAT player, and it is nearly 2 hours long. Syncing all of these tracks would be a breeze if I could convert Trk 2 SMPTE to Aux TC or something.

Tried a few obvious solutions to no avail, and the Help documentation does not reveal anything either.

    Thx – Steve

There’s a third party tool that can translate LTC:

Although i love to take your money, personally i would take another approach.
If you have the stuff in DAT, you have to ingest by normal capturing. I would buy an LTC to 422 box and use that.
    Way cheaper… (Hey, i’m Dutch!)

But you’re welcome to try my tool!

Well thanks, I appreciate your candor. I did try your tool in Demo mode and it did not seem to recognize the data on track 2 as SMPTE TC. I believe I have it setup correctly, and I did read the directions. I can’t explain why it isn’t working.

I captured it analog. I don’t know whether that makes a difference or not, as opposed to optical, AES or SDI, none of which I am capable of doing at my home setup.

    Thx – steve

    Steve,
Have a look at the waveform in an audio editor.
Zoom in to app. 1 frame. You should be seeing a block wave (with some blocks twice as wide as others, those represent zeros, two small blocks are ones)
It often happen with broken TC generators that the signal is ‘spikey’. If that’s the case my app. cannot read it. (Although a human can probably decode it. It just isn’t a fun job when you have lots of clips to do…

If it is a block wave, please sent me a piece to study why it isn’t working for you.
