Hopefully an easy one for you lot?
Hello all.
Just made the switch from Vegas on a PC to FCS2 on an uber mac. Loving FCP, loving the whole Mac thing.
Got a few annoyances but it seems that a lot of the FCP user-base has the same ones so fingers crossed for future features.
On big one that I can’t seem to find any info on is the fact that sequence playback stops as soon as I click anywhere in the timeline window. I’m used to being able to perform any sort of edit (moving clips, changing edit points etc) on the fly without stopping playback in Vegas. Seems strange to me that FCP can’t do this.
Am I being a numpty and not flipping a switch somewhere or is this a feature I should be requesting for future releases?

That’s normal. Sounds like a cool feature in Vegas. How much does it cost again?:)

I agree. I am a complete FCP devotee but I have to say that I think Vegas on the PC is about the most underrated editing program there is. It does a lot of things wonderfully. Here’s one thing it does that puts it years ahead of FCP in one regard:
In Vegas when you do an audio fade/dissolve you can choose from five or six different types of fade curves. That might sound like overkill but there have been times when the choice of one of those particular curves created just the right audio effect for me. Also, a fade handle is built into every clip on the timeline. Just drag from a corner to pull the fade out of the clip end. Or beginning. Very intuitive; very easy; very good style of editing.
I’m still an FCP guy but I would love to see this Vegas feature implemented in FCP.

Thought that might be the case. Not great but I’ll just have to get used to it…
Vegas is a great little app but feels like a toy compared to FCP. It is a lot more flexable (esp in the formats that it can take in) but I’m beginning to realise that’s not such a great thing – you get very sloppy very quickly.
I’ll stick a feature request in and cross my fingers. Got a feeling it might be being added to a very long list….

Found that Soundtrack Pro does something similar to what you’re describing but it’s a workflow step that you don’t have to do in Vegas and doesn’t work for video at all as far as I can see. I’ve covered up a lot of potential sound issues in my time using the fades in Vegas. Dragging two clips together and having both audio and video crossfade is a feature I sorely miss in FCP. Fannying around with transitions just seems a little backward by comparison.
Vegas has a lot of nifty little tricks up its sleves that the coders at Apple could do with having a look at (no one at the Apple store in Londons Regent Street had even heard of Vegas!). But it feels like a Fisher Price, My First Editing System compared to FCP. Wouldn’t hesitate to reccommend it to anyone who just wanted to mess about with some home movie though.
