scanning photos for HD
Posted by Robert Allan on April 22, 2008 at 3:33 pmDoing my first HD project in FCP 6. In previous 720×480 SD projects, I’d scan photos as TIFF’s at 300dpi so I could do moves on the photos. They’re big files, but they look great and hold up well for moves & zooms. Now for HD, should I increase scan resolution to 600dpi? What are others doing? Thx for advice…

April 22, 2008 at 3:54 pmif you are scanning a 4×6 picture at 600 dpi you get a 2400×3600 pixel image to work with, you are the only one that kwons how much movement you need or if you photos are smaller or bigger than 4×6. If you are using a 720p timeline you get a bit more movement than what you are use to whereas in 1080i you get a little less.

April 23, 2008 at 3:18 pmWOW! OK… so it appears that dpi is not the most important factor. Poor assumption on my part. I guess it’s the SIZE of the image that impacts the end quality? I’m scanning photos of every size for this project that will ultimately be 1080i. They will be cut over interviews that haven’t been conducted yet, so it’s difficult to say how much movement will be needed on each photo. I’m assuming there’s no safe “universal standard” to cover me while I’m scanning? I’ll need to scan the larger ones at one resolution and the smaller ones at a better resolution so they can be enlarged? Thanks everyone for your input…

May 23, 2008 at 1:33 amI’m working on a project that is heavy on images. I’ve found the motion tab in FCP to be severely lacking for scanning & panning photos but I do not have After Effects on the laptop I’m doing this project on so I’m sending all the photos to Motion.
What is the best way in Motion to create good zooms & pans? Should I create a camera and make the camera move? Should I just add keystones to the image? What have you found to work best?

May 23, 2008 at 3:07 amI’ve found FCP suffidient for the work that I do. The motion tab takes some learning and finesse, but I’ve found it to do ok. I hear After Effects is superior. I don’t know anyone who’s using Motion to do photo moves. Sorry…
