I’m working in DVCProHD 1280×720 24p on FCP 5.1. For client review I have been making quicktimes using Sorenson3 (they can’t view H.264) and in all of these quicktimes the video is late.

I’ve determined that it is approximately 4 frames late, so I began shifting my video layers 4 frames before making the quicktimes and it then appears in sync. This is true no matter what size of quicktime movie I make.

This has been an ok fix for client review, but I’m now ready to prep for audio mix and need to deliver reference quicktimes to the mix, and video to color correction. I’m concerned about how the final mix will line up with the final color corrected video, given that in order for the mix to be accurate I really need to slip the video track those 4 frames again so that the reference appears in sync.

Anyone having this issue? Any fixes? Am I missing something?

Shot on Varicam? Captured via firewire?

Video was shot on the HVX, captured on P2 and imported into FCP. The material plays back in sync in FCP and in the full resolution quicktimes converted from the original MXF files.

If I had to guess, I’d say it’s happening at the Sorenson step. I use the same camera and do not have this problem. Of course, I’m on 6.0.2.

Skip Sorenson and use compressor to make something. Better still, get Episode, then you can make WMV, Flash, whatever. I’m guessing you won’t see the problem then…

Agreed. Also, make sure you are running the latest version of Sorenson.

It does appear to be Sorenson related. I just made a test quicktime using H.264 and it plays back in sync. So as long as my audio mixer can playback H.264 reference QT’s I’m in the clear.

I’ll have to check on my current version of Sorenson – it’s probably old…
