mobile two-seat workflow
Hi there,
we’re investigating the possibilities of a highly mobile two editor setup.
Is there any storage-sharing solution that’s not dependant on rack space and fibrechannel?Current setup is planned like this:
5 dvcprohd tape camcorders
1 dvcprohd vtr (cameras will also be abused for ingesting)
2 mbpros for ingesting via FW
2 mbpros for editingWe need to upload edited footage every night via sat to an ftp-server. Both editors need access to the same footage as soon as it is ingested. Our “non shared”-idea was to use esata drives on each mbpro. As soon as a tape is ingested it gets copied to both editing-mbpros via gbit-ethernet. This could possibly be automated with retrospect or similar software.
Of course, we’d prefer a proper shared storage solution if it exists. If not, I’d still be thankful for any workflow improvements you can think of!

This seems to be the weak link. Upload of several gigabytes of data takes quite a while. How do you intend to accomplish this on the road?

This really is one of the weak spots. I haven’t been into the delivery part myself (some other guy’s problem for now). What I know is:
We deliver something like 5-10 minutes daily in h264. There’s some testing to be done but I think we’re ending up with something with 0.8 – 1.6 Gbyte (note: not tested until now). Last year we had some kind of inmarsat uplink and i think it’s going to be something similar again. That thing is horribly slow, so we might need to spend each night uploading ’til dawn. Unless we manage to find a file based, much faster solution. -

Cool!
But I don’t really think i can propose it with peace of mind. It’d definately be worth it, if we would do jobs like this all the time. But for two weeks a year 10k Euro is way too expensive. But nice to know such toys are out there… who knows 😀
