  If i want to capture say VHS onto my computer, I know i can use my digital camcorder as a bridge, and set FCP to non-controlable device.

  Then the footage is on my computer.

  However, do I need to adjust any other setting so that my footage exports as crisp as minidv footage from fcp?

  When I export using quicktime conversion H.264 , deinterlace source video, current fps, keyframe every 24, quality = best. 640 x 480

  Audio – AAC, mono, 44.1, best.

  on the following captured signals (all captured using the dv camera as a bridge) this is the quality i get.

  Mini(dv) Excellent
  Hi-8 (decent)
  VHS (terribly pixelated with tons of lines in it)

  I also know these mediums being analog will look worse than my lostless dv footage, but maybe im doing something wrong, do these analog signals run at different framerates? do they run in different sizes? Is there a different setting i need to have fcp set to to edit such clips? What if i need to mix these mediums together? (say minidv footage with vhs)

  despite what others say, its rarely a good idea to de-interlace any footage. All that does is throw away half your picture resolution. Re-interleaving is the proper way to get a progressive image from interlaced footage (basically merging both fields and adding a little motion blur to compensate the differences in time)

  and it makes sense for with NTSC video resolution is:

  Mini DV = 720×480

  Hi-8 = 352×480

  VHS = 320×240

  so what do i do if i have two seperate signals in the same timeline?
  ive got one movie in perticular i filmed a few years back, and the only copy i have has the live action footage in minidv, and the rest in animation off of a vhs. How would i go about setting up my timeline and exporting this movie?

  Also, im not recording to a dv tape, im bypassing the tape, and going straight through my dv cam by way of rca cable form vhs or hi-8 cam into the av output of the dv cam, and out firewire cable to my computer capturing through final cut in dv ntsc 48khz mode non-controlable device.

  would you suggest any better way to do this besides a cheap dv camera?
