I posted this question quite a while back and I it either baffled people or got lost in a slew of other posts, but I am still curious if there is a way to do it so I thought I’d try again.

What I’m trying to do is have two solid layers, say, two 200×200 pixel squares… Then, I want them to animated by each other, overlapping by say 100 pixels. When they overlap, I want that bit to be white. So, in essence, two blacks would create white whenever they overlapped.

    Make sense?

Seems like there should be some super simple way to do this, but I can’t figure out how.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    ok

    if i understand correct.

you have 2 black solids, A and B.

make a copy of both layers and place these solids, C & D above the originals.
set C’s parent to A and Ds parent to B (if they are animated, turn off the keyframes for C&D). set the trackmatte of D to C and make the solid white

    who is that masked man…

not as tricky perhaps but this will also work i think: make 2 white solids with their blend mode as difference, then where the 2 whites overlap you’ll get a black area. add an invert adjustment layer effect on top to give you the visual effect of 2 black solids that intersect and create white overlap area.
