  • Copying to DV tape without a tape deck

    Hi,

Just want to say thanks in advance for the help.

I’m currently trying to get some footage copied on to DV tape from my hard drive. However, I don’t have a tape deck.

The question I want to ask is – is it possible to use a handheld camcorder as a portable tape deck to record the footage from my hard drive to the empty DV tape?

If it is possible to effect such a transfer, will the edited sound be on the tape as well?

Sorry if this sounds like a beginner’s question. I just got my hands on to FCP a few months ago and am still trying to learn the system.

    Cheers again for the help!

Depends on your camera and your available connections to the camera. If the camera can record from one of those connections then you should be able to do it.

Nearly all DV cameras allow you to record in from the firewire input.

I can’t promise that it will work, but I can promise that if it DOES work, you’ll get all your video and audio at the exact same quality as it is on the computer. Firewire simply transfers data so nothing will be lost.

    How would I do that.

I assume it would be plugging the camera in, with the connections to the computer. As I click the save to tape option, do I need to click record on the camera?

I wish Final Cut would give some hint of this in their manual.

    Cheers for the help.
