  Multi Clip offline solution

  Hi all,
  I’m working for a performing arts organization where we record performances with up to 12 angles of ISO to a SAN using PictureReady. Last season we used DVC ProHD 1080i as our recording format, then put those quicktime files in a multi_clip and used them for the cut.

  This coming season we are switching to a 23.98 timebase for our capture and we are thinking about using ProRes as our acquisition format. Since it isn’t possible to playback more than 4 streams of ProRes at a time we need to develop a offline workflow of some sort.

  I am currently leaning toward DVC_Pro_HD 720P 23.98 as our offline codec because what ever I offline use in needs to be HD for us to check focus. Unfortunately this does save us a lot of space and is going to require us to dump our source files to LTO as soon as our offline clips are rendered causing quite a bit of data management.
  My question is does anybody have any suggestions for a better workflow or offline codec?

  Trevor,

  You should be aware that media manager for multiclip sequences is currently BROKEN!
  Meaning, when you go to media manage your offline resolution sequence, media manager is supposed to trim off any media not used. With regard to multiclips, it doesn’t. This means that when you go to redigitize material, you’ll be facing HOURS of digitizing, not seconds.

  We’ve confirmed this on many sequences since multiclips and off-line to on-line is a big part of our workflow. The only workaround seems to be to match frame EVERY MULTICLIP SHOT back to it’s original “non multiclipped” media and over cut that into the sequence. As you can imagine, this is a huge time waster. Frankly, it’s caused us to abandon the “off-line to online” workflow. We bought more storage just to be able to NOT have to work in off-line resolution.

  In conclusion, if you’re seriously thinking about going down this road, do some tests on your own. Confirm that what you’re imagining as benefit really works. It’s quite possible that Apple will have this fixed in a future release, but for now, it’s broken.
